Accra Technical University, in partnership with the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Technical Training School (EMETTS), has held a comprehensive two-day workshop dubbed “PLC Essentials: A Hands-On Introduction to Programmable Logic Controllers.” The workshop came off on September 9, at the University’s Amatrol laboratory and was designed to provide an in-depth exploration of PLC technology.
The workshop, targeted at students and faculty from the School of Ordinance, offered a comprehensive introduction to PLCs, covering foundational concepts and advancing to complex applications. It was tailored to equip participants with practical skills crucial for modern industrial automation.
Mr. Owusu Attakorah, who was the lead instructor of the workshop, emphasized the growing importance of PLCs in the field of industrial automation. He highlighted how PLCs contribute to enhanced control over machinery, systems, and processes, stressing their role in ensuring efficiency, safety, and precision. “PLCs are a solution to many of the challenges we face in the industry today,” He stated.
The sessions covered essential topics, including Basic Concepts and Understanding of PLCs, Advanced Concepts and Applications, and Basic Programming. Participants engaged in hands-on exercises, learning to set up PLCs, write and simulate Ladder Logic programs, and perform testing and debugging.
The workshop concluded with a project presentation segment, where participants developed and showcased PLC-based projects. These projects were peer reviewed and given appropriate feedback
Participants expressed satisfaction and enthusiasm about applying their new skills in their respective industries. The workshop not only broadened their knowledge but also inspired confidence in using PLC technology for practical, real-world solutions
