ATU Academic Counsellors Undergo Training in Suicidal Cases Management

The Directorate of Guidance Counselling and Career Development of Accra Technical University has organised a day’s workshop for Academic Counsellors on ‘‘The Principles of Counselling and Management of Suicidal Cases’’ on Monday, May 17, 2021 at the University Auditorium.

The resource person, Professor Joseph Osafo, Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana’s Department of Psychology, in his presentation took the participants through a short exercise to seek their general knowledge on suicide. Professor Osafo assured the participants that the workshop would help them become gatekeepers for suicide in the Accra Technical University community.

Professor Osafo touched on the myths of suicide and explained the meaning of suicide in the cultural context of Ghana. He beseeched the Academic Counsellors to put aside their personal values when handling suicidal cases among students and staff of the university.

Ending his presentation, he stressed that silencing, condemnation, trivialisation, mockery and perceiving suicide as a taboo are negative attitudes towards suicidal persons and entreated participants to refrain from such attitudes.
