Accra Technical University has held an educative seminar online for its staff on data privacy and information protection to mark this year’s Data Privacy Day that fell on Friday, 28th January.
Led by renowned Privacy Consultant, Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Expert, Emmanuel K. Gadasu, members of the University were taken through a comprehensive session on the relevance of data in our lives and why data privacy matters.
According to Mr Gadasu, data privacy and information protection have become worthy of discussion as educational institutions have increasingly become silos of data and information. Therefore, such institutions must educate their workers on data privacy to safeguard clients’ information and such institutions at large.
Speaking during the session, he discussed with participants what data is, when there is data breach and why data privacy is so important. He entreated institutions responsible for data security and protection to share information with third parties only based on a data-sharing agreement. He further charged participants to be wary of granting unauthorised access to
databases through wanton sharing of passwords. These he said help to maintain the reputation of the University as well as build trust between the University and its clients.
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Amevi Ackapovi, who was also a participant expressed his satisfaction while acknowledging the wealth of information the webinar had armed him and his staff. He was hopeful that the University would have a new slant on data privacy and
information protection. He further mentioned that the outcome of the webinar would be enforced to ensure information and data safety of both the University and its valued clients.
Data Privacy Day is an international event that occurs every year on 28th January. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness and promote privacy and data protection best practices.
