ABOUT THE CENTER

The consortium made of ATU, IET and CREEI is rich in adequate staff to handle the training need of the SESC. The Energy Efficiency and Demand Side Management Project include cost-effective strategies to bridge the gap between the demand and supply of electricity in Ghana. It involves the Four (4) activities listed below:

  • Development and Enforcement of Standards and Labels Activity
  • Improved Energy Auditing Activity
  • Education and Public Information Activity
  • Demand Side Management Infrastructure Activity

To ensure the availability of qualified and certified professionals on the Ghanaian market, who will ensure Energy Efficiency (EE) and Renewable Energy (RE) projects are properly implemented to ultimately reduce electricity consumption; the centers are to provide capacity building and training support for energy auditing to energy management professionals. The centers will provide:

  • Sustainable Energy (SE) Tertiary Education
  • Energy Audit in Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and Government facilities

The SESCs are expected to provide services to policy makers and regulators for early transformation of the SE market in Ghana and also to identify SE project opportunities and prepare for investment. The centers are to be provided with well-equipped mobile laboratories to facilitate various activities aimed at enhancing the capacity building of the SESCs. To stimulate the market and further improve the competence of the SESCs, demonstration audits shall be done on some of the ongoing Energy Efficiency and Demand Side Management Project (EEDSM) retrofits on Government buildings of MiDA. In the second phase the SESCs will continue with the activities listed in phase one expected to add certification in three categories: a) Ghana Sustainable Energy Management Professional (SEMP) Certification; b) Ghana Sustainable Energy Audit Professional Course (SEAP) Certification Course; c) Ghana Energy Audit Practical (EAP) Course;

Originally, Accra Technical University runs a number of Engineering programs that primarily relate to the energy service center. Existing Engineering programs include Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Civil Engineering.

All these programs are delivered at the HND and BTECH levels. The departments also run some existing non-tertiary courses. There are existing workshop and laboratories available at Accra Technical University to support the program. These include a machine workshop, an automobile workshop, three different mechanical laboratories. Recently Accra Technical university received state-of-the-art laboratory facilities from Amatrol through the support of government.

The equipment received, include a full laboratory of Electrotechnical equipment, electronic equipment, refrigeration and air condition equipment. Accra Technical University also disposes of facilities, located at Mpehuasem, in the Ga West Municipal Assembly (GWMA) of the Greater Accra region, including workshops for Building and Construction, Electrical, Automobile, Carpentry and Joinery. Already, the structural work of the facility being built by the government with funding from African Development Bank through the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET) had been completed. The center can also be located at the satellite Campus.
