Master of Technology (MTech) in Sustainable Electrical Power Engineering

The MTech Sustainable Electrical Power, degree is tailored to provide you with an in-depth understanding of sustainable electrical power and energy generation systems. Throughout the program, you’ll gain expertise in various aspects such as operating, controlling, designing, regulating, and managing electrical power systems. Moreover, you’ll cultivate critical evaluation skills concerning methodologies, analytical procedures, and research methods within renewable energy sources. Additionally, the curriculum emphasizes the design of stand-alone, grid-connected, and hybrid sustainable electrical power systems, along with delving into power system engineering, power electronics for power quality and grid integration, and regulatory frameworks governing power systems and electricity markets. You will be provided access to our state-of-the-art technical laboratories for testing power and control systems. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to utilize the latest industry-standard simulation software in our grid computing facilities, enabling you to investigate and design sustainable electrical power systems. Throughout your academic journey, you’ll engage in site visits to National Grid substations, control centres, and power stations. Moreover, you’ll have the privilege of attending guest lectures delivered by experts from the electricity industry and participating in conferences where you’ll present poster presentations on your research work. Our MTEC sustainable electrical power degree holds accreditation from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), ensuring that it meets the academic requirements for qualification as a professional engineer. This program offers flexible study options, allowing you to pursue it either full-time over two years or part-time over three years.

How the course will be delivered:

All lecture-based modules will take place on campus, facilitating collaboration with faculty and fellow students on practical applications. Laboratory classes will also be conducted on campus, providing opportunities for hands-on experimentation and practical activities within the University’s laboratories and workshop areas. Additionally, small group project work will be conducted in person on campus, complemented by regular interactive discussion sessions held on-site.

Attendance on campus will be required for most teaching activities, necessitating your presence on campus on most days. Written coursework submissions will be facilitated through the online Learning Management System (LMS) platform. Examinations will be administered in-person on campus, and other forms of assessment, such as presentations, are likewise expected to be conducted on campus.

Required equipment

You will need access to a laptop or desktop PC to participate in online activities, complete coursework, and digital exams. Please refer to the minimum specifications provided here.

Additionally, computers are available for your use throughout the campus, and there are laptop loan schemes available to assist you during your studies. Further details can be found here.

How you will learn on your course

The sustainable electrical power degree is administered by a proficient team of multidisciplinary academic professionals, including many globally recognized researchers who integrate their ongoing research directly into the course curriculum. Additionally, guest lectures from industry partners, visits to power plants, and networking opportunities at conferences with prominent industry experts enhance the learning experience.

The study approach encompasses a blend of lectures, seminars, workshops, computer simulations, self-directed study, and both individual and collaborative project work.

For any non-academic assistance needed during your tenure at Accra Technical University, the Student Support and Welfare Team is readily available to offer support.

The programme follows an intensive, block-mode delivery format. During the first two semesters, you will undertake taught modules with each semester consisting of twelve weeks of concentrated instruction. Subsequently, you will devote two semesters to industry attachment and dissertation research. The dissertation entails a substantial research exploration focused on a contemporary and demanding aspect of sustainable electrical power. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to pursue an industry-based dissertation if preferred.
