Accra Technical University (ATU) is set to become the official venue for the Ghana Universities Debate Championship (GUDC) 2025, scheduled to take place from 6th to 11th October.

This marks the first time in Ghana’s tertiary education history that a technical University has been selected to host the nation’s most prestigious debating event.

The 2025 edition is expected to be one of the most competitive yet, with 14 universities confirmed to participate. Among them are the University of Ghana, Ashesi University, University of Cape Coast, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University for Development Studies, University of Health and Allied Sciences, GIMPA, Takoradi Technical University, University of Energy and Natural Resources, AAMUSTED, Cape Coast Technical University, SDD-UBIDS and others.

Dr Martin Owusu Amoamah, Senior Lecturer and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, described ATU’s hosting role as a proud milestone. “It is a great honour for ATU to host this championship. We see this as more than just a tournament; it is an opportunity to showcase our intellectual community and highlight the growing stature of Technical Universities in Ghana’s higher education space,” he said.

Mr Michael Koranteng, Coach of the ATU Debate Society and member of the Organising Committee, stressed the significance of the event for students. “For ATU debaters, sharing a platform with some of the brightest minds in the country is both a challenge and an opportunity. Hosting in Accra also means participants will enjoy access to cultural and historic sites, making the championship both intellectually and socially rewarding,” he noted.

Situated in the heart of the capital, ATU offers more than just an academic stage. Delegates will be within reach of Accra’s vibrant attractions, from the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Independence Arch to Labadi Beach and the Arts Centre, ensuring a memorable experience for all.

By hosting GUDC 2025, ATU is not only making history but also demonstrating the rising influence and capability of Technical Universities.
