The third edition of the Leavers Seminar kicked off on July 10, 2026, at the Auditorium of Accra Technical University. Organised by the University’s Directorate of Public Affairs, the seminar brings together final-year students, alumni, and industry professionals to discuss life after school, career pathways, and the skills needed to succeed in the 21st-century world of work.
This year’s seminar was held on the theme, “Beyond Graduation: Building Careers, Character, and Connections,” and attracted final-year students, alumni, faculty members, and professionals from various industries. The programme created an opportunity for participants to share practical experiences, career lessons, and advice to help students prepare for life after graduation.
Speaking at the opening pf the seminar, the Director of Public Affairs, Ms. Fausta Killian Ganaa, described the programme as a pre-departure orientation for final-year students. She said the seminar was designed to expose students to the realities of the job market while providing an opportunity to learn from experienced professionals and successful alumni.
She also encouraged the students to remain connected to their alma mater after graduation by becoming active members of the University’s Alumni Association and contributing to the growth of the institution.
Delivering the keynote address on “Preparing for Life Beyond the Lecture Hall,” the Chief Executive Officer of Idea Digital Hub, Mr. John Kofi Anan, encouraged students to think beyond their academic certificates and focus on building practical skills that make them competitive in today’s world of work.
He urged students to embrace entrepreneurship and take advantage of emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence, to improve their skills and create opportunities for themselves. He noted that the changing nature of work requires graduates to continue learning long after they leave the classroom.
The Global Alumni Chairman of Accra Technical University, Mr. David Ayisala, advised the final year students to become good ambassadors of the University wherever they find themselves.
He reminded them that their conduct and attitude would shape how people perceive Accra Technical University. He also encouraged them to join the Alumni Association, explaining that it provides valuable opportunities for networking, mentorship, career referrals, scholarships, and international
study opportunities. According to him, professional recommendations have become increasingly important in today’s competitive job market.
Adding to the discussion, the Global Alumni Vice Chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Nyavor, highlighted entrepreneurship as one of the practical solutions to graduate unemployment. He encouraged students to develop the habit of identifying problems within their communities and finding innovative solutions, noting that successful businesses are built around solving real-life challenges.
Chairperson of the occasion, Professor Mrs. Emelia Ohene Afriyie, shared her personal story of determination and perseverance, recounting her journey from selling on the streets of Makola to becoming a professor. She encouraged students not to allow their background or present circumstances to limit their aspirations but to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to achieving their goals.
Also sharing his experiences was the Chief Executive Officer of VG2 Construction, Mr. Bernard Cosmos Gonzalves, who reflected on his years as a student of Accra Technical University. He encouraged students to participate actively in campus life while avoiding bad company and other social vices. He stressed that academic success alone is not enough and advised students to develop good character, integrity, and positive attitudes alongside their professional skills.
The Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Professor Nana Yaw Asabere, urged the students to uphold the values of Accra Technical University by demonstrating integrity, creativity, innovation, and excellence wherever they find themselves after graduation.
The Dean of Graduate Studies, Professor Frank Opuni, introduced students to the postgraduate programmes offered by the University and encouraged them to consider further studies as part of their professional development. He advised them to pursue careers driven by purpose and passion rather than financial reward alone.
The ATU Leavers Seminar is an annual initiative of the Directorate of Public Affairs aimed at preparing final-year students for the transition from university into the world of work. Since its introduction, the seminar has served as a platform for students to engage with alumni, employers, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders who share practical experiences and career guidance. It also promotes stronger ties between graduates and the University while encouraging lifelong learning, professional networking, and active participation in the Alumni Association.
