Following the appointment of new Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments and Heads of Units, the Management of Accra Technical University (ATU) has organised a two-day orientation programme to prepare them for their new responsibilities.
The programme, held at Central Hotel, Ridge from 24th to 25th September 2026, Accra, saw the new office holders converge to learn more about leadership and how the University works.
Over the two days, they were taken through academic leadership, administration, finance, procurement, human resource management, quality assurance and other areas that will form part of their work.
Turning Positions into Action
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Amevi Acakpovi, opened the leadership conversation with a simple message: leadership is about “making things work.”
He encouraged the new office holders to look beyond their titles and focus on what they can achieve in their respective offices.
Prof. Acakpovi asked them to turn their responsibilities into clear actions that can contribute to the growth of the University. He also spoke about working together, learning from others and making room for mentorship and professional development.
The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Felix Kutsanedzie, continued the conversation from an academic perspective. He took participants through academic leadership and the responsibilities that come with it. He also explained the role of regulatory institutions in the work of the University.
Understanding How the University Works
Taking up a leadership position also comes with administrative responsibilities.
Registrar, Dr. Janneta Sika Akoto, explained what is expected of office holders and staff. She also took participants through administrative writing and minuting, with attention to proper documentation and communication.
The legal and policy side of their work was handled by the Head of Legal Affairs, Ms. Esaa Elorm Acolatse. She introduced participants to important statutory documents, University policies and the Staff Code of Ethics.
Prof. Phyllis Otu, Director of Quality Assurance and Academic Planning, turned attention to ATU’s new Strategic Plan. She explained the role of the new office holders in helping the University turn the plan into action.
Managing People and Resources
Leadership also means being responsible for people, money and University resources.
Director of Finance, Mr. Frank Owusu Boakye, took participants through the University’s financial systems. His session covered imprest, payroll, salaries and allowances.
Mr. Prince Afari, representing the Head of Procurement, Dr. Isaac Yornu, explained procurement processes and stores requisition procedures.
The Deputy Registrar of the Directorate of Human Resource Development and Organisational Development, Mrs. Linda Tormeti, discussed staff development, career progression, promotion and welfare.
Accountability was another part of the conversation. Director of Internal Audit, Mr. Godsway Oyiadzo, explained the audit system and the importance of keeping proper evidence and records.
Keeping Academic Work on Track
Attention also turned to what happens in the classroom and how academic standards are maintained.
Dr. Martin Owusu Amoamah and Mrs. Sarah Morrison took participants through pedagogical skills and quality assurance processes.
University Examination Officer, Dr. Francis Gyedu, explained the University’s examination systems and the processes involved in administering examinations.
Dr. Sylvester Hatsu, Head of ICT, focused on the digital systems that support these activities. He discussed examination results processing, official emails and the use of iCampus.
University Librarian, Dr. Florence Plockey, also introduced participants to library resources that can support teaching, research and career development.
Ready for the Work Ahead
The two days gave the newly appointed office holders a clearer picture of what comes with their new roles.The orientation showed how academic work, administration, finance, people, technology and University policies connect.
As they settle into their respective positions, the task ahead is to put what they have learned into practice and contribute to the work and direction of Accra Technical University.
