OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Fashion Design and Textiles is one of the departments under the Faculty of Applied Arts, dedicated to delivering comprehensive, practice-orientated education in the fields of Fashion and textiles. The Department offers a range of programs designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for success in the dynamic fashion industry.

The mandate of the department is to raise professionals for the modern fashion and textile industry. The department aims to equip students with the skills and competencies required in the industry while also instilling in them an understanding of the needs of the new generation and a desire to create a better living environment in the fashion world. The Fashion Design and Textiles programme is designed to train students with a holistic knowledge and a well-balanced perspective of fashion and textiles design and production. The syllabus is based on competency-based teaching (CBT), which is more practical in orientation.

The department is equipped with laboratories and workshops, including a design studio, textile and garment laboratories, and computer labs. These resources provide students with an environment conducive to creativity and innovation, essential for mastering contemporary fashion design and textile production techniques. The department has qualified and experienced human resources. It has a total staff strength of fourteen (14) full-time and six (6) part-time lecturers, one (1) contract staff, three (3) instructors, and and five (5) technicians, as well as two (2) administrative staff.

PROGRAMMES OFFERED BY THE DEPARTMENT
MTech FASHION PRODUCTION AND MANAGEMENT

The Master of Technology (MTech) in Fashion Production and Management is a forward-looking programme designed to bridge the managerial and technical gaps within Ghana’s garment manufacturing industry. It aims to produce highly skilled professionals equipped with advanced knowledge in fashion production, strategic management, and global industry practices.

This programme addresses key challenges facing the sector, including overreliance on expatriate expertise, limited understanding of global production dynamics, low international competitiveness, inadequate capacity for mass production, and the generally low economic value associated with Ghana’s garment industry.

Graduates of this Programme will be equipped with a strong foundation in both theoretical frameworks and
hands-on practices, enabling them to lead and innovate within the local and international fashion landscape. The programme also fosters leadership, critical thinking, and entrepreneurial skills, preparing students to manage and transform local firms into globally competitive enterprises.

  • Objectives

The Programme seeks to:

1. Train professionals who are knowledgeable in social compliance issues to guide garment factories in meeting social compliance requirements in setting up. factories

2. Equip the professionals in garment industrial engineering so that they can plan and execute mass production based on international standards and timelines.

3. Equip professionals with operational skills, knowledge, and competencies necessary to be successful middle and senior management leaders capable of applying sound principles and approaches to solve quality assurance problems in garment manufacture.

4. Train competent professionals who can uphold best practices and respond to new and emerging trends in garment manufacturing.

Train professionals to use mass-production equipment and technologies in garment manufacturing.

Assessment
Students’ performance and achievement consist of continuous assessments, end-of-semester written or practical examinations, fieldwork reports, and industrial attachment reports. The mode of assessment involves continuous assessments, quizzes, assignments, etc., and end-of-semester examinations. Marks for continuous assessment and mid-semester constitute 40%, and those of end-of-semester examinations shall constitute 60%. 
 
  • FOUR-YEAR BACHELOR OF TECHNOLOGY (BTECH) IN FASHION DESIGN AND TEXTILES
  • The programme is expected to provide opportunities for pre-tertiary school graduates, industry workers and professionals to be trained to meet the skills demand in the areas of Fashion/ Textiles Design and Illustration; Textiles and Garment Manufacture, and other auxiliary areas of the sector, and give it the impetus to industrialise.

This programme of study seeks to: 

  1. Provide students with knowledge and practical skills in the creation, illustration and production of textiles, garments and garment accessories.  

  1.  Equip students with competencies in applying the appropriate techniques and technologies in the production of textiles, garments and garment accessories. 

  1. Empower students with skills in leadership, critical thinking, information communication technology, project management and entrepreneurship, to enable them function effectively in the Fashion industry.

  • Entry Requirements 

Eligible applicants for the BTech Fashion Design and Textiles Technology Programme include:  

  1. Admission into level 100 

  1. West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) Applicants 

Applicants with minimum grade of C6 or better in three (3) core subjects i.e. English Language, Core Mathematics plus Integrated Science or Social Studies and any three (3) elective subjects will be admitted to level 100 of the Programme 

  1. Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) Applicants 

Applicants with minimum grade of D or better in three (3) core subjects i.e. English Language, Core Mathematics plus Integrated Science or Social Studies and any three (3) elective subjects will be admitted to Level 100 of the Programme 

  1. General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level Applicants 

Applicants with passes in three (3) subjects (at least, one of the passes should be Grade D or better) in addition to having credit passes (Grade 6) in five GCE Ordinary Level subjects including English, Mathematics and a Science subject (for non-science students) and an Arts subject for Science students will be admitted to level 100 of the Programme 

  1. Mature Student Applicants  

Mature student applicant must:   

  1. Be at least 25 years old.  

  1. Show proof of age with birth certificate or any legitimate documentary proof of birth date which is at least 5 years old at the time of application.  

  1. Provide introductory letter from employer or show any other proof of employment for 2 years or more.  

  1. Pass a mature student entrance examinations to be organized by the school.  

  1. Applicants with Foreign Certificates 

International applicants may be admitted based on qualifications from their home countries for which equivalence shall be determined by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) of Ghana and submitted to the University. Evidence of proficiency in the English Language will be required in the case of applicants from non-English-speaking countries. 

International applicants are also requested to acquire a non-Citizen Ghana card as a pre-requisite for the regularisation of admission.

 

B: Admission into Top-Up  

  1. Higher National Diploma (HND) in Fashion Design and Textiles Technology Applicants 

Applicants with the 3-year Higher National Diploma (HND) in Fashion Design and Textiles Technology, with a CGPA of not less than 2.5 from a recognized institution, without working experience in the garment and textile sector, may be considered for admission to level 200 of the BTech Fashion Design and Textiles Technology Programme after passing an interview.
