The Accra Technical University (ATU) Health Innovation Project aims to bridge the gap between research, development, and practical solutions in the healthcare sector. By leveraging Design Thinking methodologies, the project seeks to address real-world challenges specific to Ghana’s healthcare landscape. The core of the initiative is to identify, mentor, and equip young emerging leaders and innovators with the skills to apply design thinking in creating sustainable, locally relevant solutions. The project envisions a pipeline of talented individuals who will be trained to develop interventions that target pressing local health issues, ultimately aiming to integrate these innovations into Ghana’s healthcare system.

To foster a collaborative environment, the project will engage multiple stakeholders across the healthcare ecosystem. Key partners include Design Thinking Ghana Hub (DTGH), which will provide technical expertise in Design Thinking processes, as well as major healthcare institutions such as the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (focusing on its Blood Bank), the Ridge Hospital, and the 37 Military Hospital. Regulatory and standards organizations, including the Ghana Standards Authority and the Foods and Drugs Authority, will ensure that the solutions meet industry requirements and safety standards. In addition, external collaborators, such as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and the Kirk House Foundation in the United States, will provide international support, resources, and insights into best practices. Together, these stakeholders aim to create a comprehensive support system for young innovators, facilitating impactful contributions to Ghana’s healthcare sector.
