The Debate and Public Speaking Club of Accra Technical University has raised the University’s flag high far away in Uganda in the Pan-African Universities debate championship, which took place in Uganda on the 16th of December 2024. The team chalked significant success, swooping multiple awards and setting remarkable records in the championship that would be etched in the history of the prestigious championship.

Team ATU did not just go to the championship to make up the numbers, as they quickly showed their dominance in the debate series, winning medals in all categories and setting some fantastic records.
The team was 1st and 2nd best Public speaking adjudication runner-up in Africa, as well as the 3rd Best Public Speaking in Africa and runner-up. In addition to this, the team found itself among the top 3 best public speaking judges in the Africa category. Ultimately, the team won the Best Public Speaking Judge in Africa medal.
There were also several record-breaking performances from the participants from ATU, deserving of mention. For instance, of the 5 students who represented ATU, 4 won at least an award. Furthermore, ATU became the only University to reach the Public Speaking African finalists for the second PAUDC in two years and set the record for Africa’s best 3 Judges in Africa, with all coming from Accra Technical University. The record for the number of appearances for any Ghanaian representation in Africa was also set by ATU, having appeared two times in a top-room debate. Overall, the team emerged as the best technical University in Ghana and in Africa by performance for any Ghanaian University.
The Pan-African Universities’ Debate Championship is Africa’s premier debate championship, which offers a platform for intellectual exchange, critical thinking, and meaningful dialogue on pressing issues facing Africa and the world. The 2024 edition was hosted by Uganda, “the pearl of Africa” offering a mix of adventure from its stunning landscape and cultural heritage.
