Night with the Vice-Chancellor: ATU Strengthens Bond with Media
Accra Technical University (ATU) hosted a press soiree on January 16, 2024, at the university’s guest lodge; inviting media representatives to participate in an event designed to strengthen the connection between the university and the press. Seasoned journalists, news editors, and media managers from print, broadcast, and digital platforms came together for the media engagement, which was called “An Evening with the Vice-Chancellor.” Set against the backdrop of the university’s esteemed campus, the occasion served as a forum for fostering open dialogue, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas between ATU management, faculty members, and media professionals. The commencement of the evening was marked by a warm greeting from the university’s leadership, reaffirming their dedication to transparency and effective communication. In addressing the assembly, Prof. Amevi Acakpovi, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of ATU, extended a warm welcome to the media professionals in attendance. He expressed, “The primary objective of tonight’s gathering is to facilitate interaction, foster meaningful connections, and share insights regarding some exciting initiatives currently underway at ATU.” In his presentation, Prof. Acakpovi commended the media for acknowledging their crucial role in informing the public about policies and programs. As an institution, we are dedicated to improving our communication efforts, aligning them with our core objectives, and creating opportunities to fortify relationships. “I want to take this moment to convey our appreciation to all of you for your varied contributions in supporting us throughout the year and for the accomplishments we have achieved thus far. With confidence, I look forward to the continued flourishing and success of this collaboration in the years to come,” he said. The press soiree featured a question-and-answer forum that provided journalists the opportunity to interact with faculty members, administrators, and students’ representative council executives. These discussions delved into ATU’s academic programmes, research undertakings, and its significant contributions to technological advancements in the region. The interactive format of the sessions enabled media professionals to gain a deeper understanding of ATU’s significant role in shaping the educational landscape in Accra. The Head of News, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Mr. Nii Odartey Lamptey, commended the management of ATU for its deliberate efforts in positioning the University as the foremost technical university in Ghana. He stressed the need for ATU to continue projecting their success through the media to promote the name of ATU. The university showcased success stories, academic milestones, and the diverse talents that contribute to the vibrant ATU community. Journalists had the opportunity to engage with deans and faculty members, bringing their narratives to the forefront and spotlighting the positive influence of ATU’s educational programmes. As the press soiree drew to a close, it was evident that the event had successfully deepened the connection between Accra Technical University and the media. Both parties expressed their commitment to sustained collaboration, ensuring that the university’s accomplishments and contributions are communicated accurately and effectively to the wider public. TUTAG-ATU Donates to Mepe Flood Victims
The Accra Technical University Chapter of the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), yesterday stepped forward to aid the residents of Mepe in the North Tongu districts in the Volta Region in the aftermath of the Akosombo water spillage. Recognising the challenges faced by the community, particularly in the realm of education, TUTAG’s-ATU benevolent gesture aims to alleviate the hardships brought about by the unfortunate incident. The Akosombo water spillage, which occurred, left several communities grappling with the consequences of flooding, displacements, and the disruption of daily life. Among the affected areas, Mepe found itself in a dire situation, especially concerning educational infrastructure and resources. The generosity displayed by TUTAG, ATU Chapter, comes as a ray of hope for the people of Mepe. Presenting the items, Mr. Hanson Obiri-Yeboah the chairman of TUTAG, ATU Chapter said the relief item presented was under the umbrella body of ATU to help revive education in the community as they gather to get back to their normal life. He also hammered their visit as an opportunity to assess the situation at hand, preparing to give back to the community in their next visit amidst planning on organising health screening for the community members. The donation, worth GHc20,000.00, consists of essential educational materials, including exercise books, school uniforms, school bags, stationery, and other resources that are crucial for the continuity of learning. The gesture not only addresses the immediate needs of the community but also underscores the pivotal role of education in rebuilding and revitalising the affected areas. TUTAG’s ATU chapter initiative aligns with the broader goal of fostering resilience and empowerment within communities facing adversity.
ATU Outdoors Innovative Projects at Skills Exhibition; Launches Book
Accra Technical University (ATU) hosted an exhilarating exhibition program to spotlight the diverse talents within its student community. Held at the university’s auditorium, the event was a vibrant platform for students to showcase their inventive projects, practical expertise, and creative endeavours across various disciplines. The exhibition, a testament to ATU’s strong commitment to practical education and skill development, presented an impressive array of exhibits spanning engineering, technology, the arts, design, and computer science. Drawing a diverse audience comprising students, faculty, industry professionals, and the public, the event was a captivating testament to the university’s burgeoning talent. In his opening remarks, Prof. Amevi Acakpovi, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of ATU, commended the students for their exceptional contributions. Speaking on the theme for the program, “Applied Research and Innovation for Sustainable Development”, Prof. Acakpovi emphasised the significance of such exhibitions in nurturing innovation and practical learning, reiterating the institution’s dedication to fostering a culture of creativity and skill development. Prof. Acakpovi also highlighted the need for a joint research laboratory to enhance equipment and foster collaborations with other institutions for more innovative projects. Dr. Fred Kyei Asamoah, the Director General of the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, delivered an insightful speech on the role of technical universities in Ghana’s economic development. He stressed the importance of applied research and its impact on community development, urging researchers to implement strategies that propel Ghana’s growth as a developing nation. On his part, Mr. Tsonam Cleanse Akpeloo, the Chief Executive Officer of SUKU Technologies and the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), encouraged students to cultivate a strong work ethic for their future ventures into the industrial world. From intricate engineering models to sustainable design solutions, each exhibit demonstrated the students’ commitment, creativity, and technical competence. Engaging demonstrations and presentations provided deeper insights into the concepts. Faculty members, industry experts, and guests were impressed by the caliber of work displayed, acknowledging the students’ dedication and problem-solving abilities. The event facilitated networking opportunities and potential collaborations, reinforcing ATU’s reputation for producing skilled graduates ready to excel in diverse fields. Adding a historic touch, the exhibition featured the first-ever book launch at the university by Prof. Amevi Acakpovi titled “Technological Innovation Driving Sustainable Entrepreneurial Growth in Developing Nations” published by IGI Global in 2023. The book aims to foster industrial evolution and promote innovative projects.

His research interests focus on antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, infectious disease diagnosis, public health microbiology and natural antimicrobial products, leading to several publications in high-impact journals including PLOS One Journal. As a Registered Medical Laboratory Scientist, Dr. Hackman has played a pivotal role in enhancing laboratory education and practice in Ghana. His leadership has been instrumental in establishing new academic department (Department of Medical Laboratory Technology) and academic programmes, including the Bachelor of Technology in Medical Laboratory Science, Bachelor of Medical Imaging Technology and Bachelor of Veterinary Laboratory Science at Accra Technical University. He has previously served in various administrative capacities, including Director of Quality Assurance and Academic Planning; Director of Research and Innovation; and Founding Head of Department, Department of Medical Laboratory Technology. He has served on several statutory and adhoc committees including Chairman, Health and Safety Committee and Chairman, Strategic Plan Implementation Monitoring and Evaluation Committee. Beyond academia, Dr. Hackman is actively involved in professional and community service. He is a consultant for the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in developing four curricula for qualified supervisors’ course for manufacturers of food, herbal, cosmetics and house chemical substances, a reviewer for several scientific journals, and regular member of America Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. His dedication extends to social service, where he serves in leadership roles within The Church of Pentecost, Tema, a licensed lay counselling practitioner and a family man. Dr. Hackman remains committed to academic excellence, innovation in medical laboratory science, and the mentorship of the next generation of scientists and healthcare professionals. Kutsanedzie is a full professor in agricultural and biosystems engineering at Accra Technical University and a member of the Mechanical Engineering Department., and a professional engineer licensed under the division of Agricultural and Bioengineering. He was appointed Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor on March 11, 2024. He is a prolific researcher and writer who has several genres of publications such as short communications; reviewer papers, edited book chapters; edited books with chapters; conferences papers, and peer-reviewed papers in the Science Citation Index (SCI) and Engineering Village Index (EI) journals retrievable from the World of Science (WoS) spanning his areas of research interest and focus. He has a specialty in fabrication of nondestructive sensing technologies – near-infrared, ultraviolet-visible and Raman spectroscopic systems, hyperspectral imaging and multispectral imaging systems, colourimetric sensors, electronic nose (e-nose) devices, electronic tongues (e-tongue) devices, computer vision, biosensors, upconversion and surface-enhanced spectroscopy (SERS) nanosensors for which his works have been world-widely published and received awards. His novel work, published in the Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical Journal, on the development of a sensing probe composed of porphyrin-based chemodyes coupled to a near-infrared spectrophotometer and supported by chemometric algorithms pioneered the re-engineering of near-infrared spectroscopy systems for detection of gaseous substances – volatile, which hitherto could detect only solid and liquid matter. Engr. Prof. Kutsanedzie has garnered twelve (12) years teaching experience at the tertiary level, with a research interest in areas such as: designing and fabrication of microelectromechanical machines (MEMS) or devices / lab-on-chip devices; sensors fabrication for quality and safety monitoring of biomaterials, food, environment, biomedical and pharmaceutical materials; synthesis and fabrication of nanomaterial and biomaterial based devices for varied uses – bio and biomedical imaging, biosensing; bionanotechnology, fabrication of devices coupled to chemometric algorithms for nondestructive detection of materials; application of multivariate algorithms for image and spectral data preprocessing and processing; food processing and biosystems designs; food-water waste treatment and management systems designs; renewal energy systems; bioenergy and biofuel generation; project management; experimental designs and analysis. He held several scholarships – Government of Ghana Scholarship at the secondary school level (1995 – 1997); Jiangsu Presidential Scholarship (2015-2015), Jiawen Fellowships Award in recognition of Excellence Academic Performance (2018), JU – China, Food and Biological Engineering School Scholarship (2015-2018). Engr. Prof. Kutsanedzie received the best PhD student’s dissertation and outstanding award, from Jiangsu University in 2018 (JU), China. He has in addition received the best poster, academic star and fellowship awards from JU. Coupled to these, he has written and won several grants; supervised several Higher National Diploma and Degree students’ projects and ten (10) postgraduate students project – both masters and doctorate degree dissertations. Engr. Prof. Felix Y.H. Kutsanedzie is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, AccraTechnical University. Prior to that, he held the following positions – Head, Research and Innovation Centre (2013 – 2015); and Drone and Innovative Technologies Development Centre (2018 -2021). He has served on several committees to share his expertise and as well contributed in many research conferences both on community, institutional, national and international platforms. He served as an Associate Editor for the Directory of Open Journals (DOAJ) from 2015-2017, Liaison for functional food in Africa Universities (2012-2016), Editor of APT Multidisciplinary Journal; Editor for PLoS One; Editor for BioMed Research International Journal; Associate Editor of Frontiers Sensors; and currently a certified Elsevier peer-reviewer and a member on the Committee for Publishing Ethics (COPE). Additionally, is currently the editor of Editor of Advances in Nanowires Synthesis and Applications to Sensing Technologies [Book], Intech Open Publishers, UK, which is expected to be launched later in 2022.
