ATU Partners Across Africa to Strengthen Technical Education

In line with its renewed vision of becoming the preferred technical university in Africa for industry impact, emerging technologies, and sustainability, Accra Technical University (ATU), has expanded its reach through strategic partnerships with universities in East Africa.

The University has entered into collaborations with six institutions in Uganda and Rwanda, a move aimed at extending its footprint within Sub-Saharan Africa and strengthening technical education through practical teaching and relevant research.

In Uganda, ATU signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Kampala International University, Kyambogo University, and Makerere University. In Rwanda, the University also formalised partnerships with Kigali Independent University ULK, ULK Polytechnic Institute, and University of Rwanda.

The partnerships will focus on promoting quality education, supporting staff and student exchange programmes, and encouraging joint research and innovation. They will also create opportunities for the universities to share expertise, learn from each other, and build stronger institutions.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Amevi Acakpovi, indicated that the initiative forms part of the University’s broader commitment to advancing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) beyond Ghana.

He explained that partnerships like these are important because they create opportunities for learning, collaboration, and innovation. They also help institutions to stay relevant in a fast-changing world where technology and skills are constantly evolving.
“For students, these partnerships open doors to new experiences. They may have the opportunity to study or take part in short programmes in other African countries, learn about different cultures, and gain broader exposure. For staff, it creates room for collaboration, joint teaching, and shared research”, he said.
