ATU, IET Ghana Inspire Future Engineers at International Day of Engineering Seminar

The Faculty of Engineering of Accra Technical University (ATU), in partnership with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Ghana, Women in Engineering, has organised a seminar to mark the International Day of Engineering under the theme, “Engineering Intelligence.” The seminar, held on June 23, 2026, at the University’s Auditorium, brought together engineering professionals, academics, and students from selected basic and senior high schools, including Amugi Avenue School, Institute of Islamic Studies, Amusudai SHS, Liberty Avenue School, Alogboshie Basic School, Adabraka St. Joseph Basic School, and Accra Technical University. The programme sought to expose students, particularly young girls, to opportunities within the engineering profession while highlighting the role of engineering in solving societal challenges and driving development. Speaking at the opening of the seminar, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Ing. Surv. Dr. Tina Wemegah, highlighted the important role engineering plays in society and encouraged more young people, especially girls, to pursue careers in the field. She noted that engineering remains one of the key professions driving development and innovation across the world. According to her, the International Day of Engineering provides an opportunity to reflect on the contributions of engineers and the impact of engineering solutions on society. Dr. Wemegah further stated that engineering is fundamentally about solving problems and improving lives, adding that individuals who are creative and solution-oriented should consider careers in the profession. Delivering the keynote address, Engr. Dr. Millicent Agangiba, Assistant Professor at the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College in the United States of America, called on engineering professionals and aspiring engineers to incorporate emotional intelligence and moral intelligence into their work. Speaking on the theme, she explained that engineering intelligence goes beyond technical knowledge and innovation. According to her, engineers must also understand people, appreciate diverse perspectives, and develop solutions that respond to real human needs. She noted that technology alone cannot transform society and that engineering without diversity cannot effectively address the challenges confronting communities. Dr. Agangiba therefore encouraged students to place people at the centre of their work and ensure that their innovations contribute positively to society. She also urged engineers to demonstrate empathy and uphold ethical standards in their professional practice. Describing engineering as a field with endless opportunities, she encouraged students to explore emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things, and other technology-driven fields. The Chairperson of the occasion, Engr. Adjoa Gyamera, highlighted the entrepreneurial opportunities within engineering and encouraged young girls to develop an interest in the profession. According to her, engineering equips individuals with problem-solving skills that can be applied to create businesses and innovative solutions. She noted that women possess qualities such as attention to detail, which are highly valuable in the engineering space. She encouraged young women to remain focused and determined, stating that with the right attitude, perseverance, and commitment, they can excel in a profession that has traditionally been dominated by men. Also speaking at the seminar, Engr. Dr. Miriam Eduful, President of the Ghana Institute of Safety and Environmental Professionals and General Manager in charge of Safety, Health and Environment at the Electricity Company of Ghana, advocated for human-centred engineering. She explained that engineering solutions should be developed with people in mind and should respond to the needs of society. She therefore encouraged students to build strong networks and remain connected to their communities. Dr. Eduful also urged students to be versatile and explore different areas within engineering while acquiring additional skills that would make them competitive in the job market. The seminar featured a panel discussion where accomplished women engineers shared their experiences and insights on navigating their careers and applying creativity to solve contemporary challenges. Students also had the opportunity to engage engineering professionals during a mentorship session, where they received guidance on career development, industry expectations, and the skills required to succeed in the engineering profession

Faculty of Engineering Strengthens Capacity for Strategic Plan Implementation and Research Excellence

The Faculty of Engineering, in collaboration with the Quality Assurance and Academic Planning Directorate (QAAPD) and the University Library, organised a seminar and workshop on “Strategic Plan Implementation and Research Professional Development” to equip staff with the knowledge and skills needed to support the successful implementation of the University’s 2026-2030 Strategic Plan. Held at the ATU Akwaaba Lodge Conference Room on June 17, 2026, the event brought together academic and administrative staff to strengthen their understanding of strategic execution, research development, and professional growth. In her welcome address, the Ag. Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Ing. Dr. Tina Wemegah, emphasised that achieving the University’s strategic goals requires the active participation of all staff. She described the Strategic Plan as a roadmap for institutional excellence, aligned with ATU’s vision of becoming “the preferred Technical University in Africa for industry impact, emerging technologies, and sustainability.” She urged participants to translate strategy into measurable results through collective commitment and action. The Director of QAAPD, Professor Phyllis Otu, highlighted the essential role staff play in advancing the University’s strategic priorities. She stressed that effective implementation is important to transforming vision into reality, noting that institutional success depends on a shared commitment to execution. ATU and ESATIC Sign Strategic Partnership Agreement to Advance ICT Education and Research

Accra Technical University (ATU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the École Supérieure Africaine des Technologies de l’Information et de la Communication (ESATIC) of Côte d’Ivoire to strengthen academic cooperation, research, innovation, and skills development in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The agreement was signed during ATU’s maiden Flag-Raising Ceremony and International Students’ Time with the Vice-Chancellor, underscoring the University’s commitment to internationalisation and regional collaboration in higher education. The MoU was signed on behalf of ATU by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Amevi Acakpovi, while Professor Adama Konaté signed on behalf of ESATIC. The partnership establishes a framework for cooperation between the two institutions in key areas, including ICT education and training, student internships and industrial placements, academic exchange, joint research, innovation, and professional development. Under the agreement, students from both institutions will have opportunities to undertake internships and industrial attachments in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. The collaboration will also facilitate semester-long and short-term student exchange programmes, enabling learners to gain international exposure and broaden their academic experiences. The partnership further provides for the exchange of lecturers, researchers, trainers, and technical staff, as well as participation in conferences, workshops, seminars, and capacity-building programmes designed to enhance teaching, learning, and research outcomes. A major component of the collaboration is the development of joint academic programmes and specialised training initiatives in emerging technology fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing, Internet of Things (IoT), Telecommunications, Software Engineering, and Digital Business. The two institutions also agreed to pursue joint research projects, publications, innovation challenges, hackathons, incubation programmes, and regional digital skills initiatives that contribute to technological advancement and socio-economic development across West Africa. In addition, the partnership seeks to strengthen links between academia and industry by leveraging the corporate networks of both institutions to create internship, employment, entrepreneurship, and innovation opportunities for students and graduates. The agreement reflects the shared vision of ATU and ESATIC to promote academic excellence, technological innovation, and regional integration through collaborative education and research initiatives. The MoU will remain in force for an initial period of five years, with opportunities for renewal by mutual agreement.

Sierra Leone High Commissioner Commends ATU’s Commitment to Internationalisation and Cultural Diversity

The Sierra Leone High Commissioner to Ghana, His Excellency Mohamed Hassan Kaisamba, has commended Accra Technical University (ATU) for promoting international understanding, cultural exchange, and African unity through its maiden Flag-Raising Ceremony and International Students’ Time with the Vice-Chancellor. The event brought together members of the diplomatic corps, University management, staff, students, and representatives of various countries to celebrate the rich cultural diversity of the ATU community. Delivering the keynote address as Special Guest of Honour, H.E. Kaisamba described the ceremony as an important platform for strengthening friendship among nations and fostering intercultural understanding among young people. Speaking on the theme, “Raising Flags, Building Bridges: Promoting International Understanding and Cultural Exchange,” he noted that the event reflected the broader purpose of higher education in an increasingly interconnected world. “Each flag tells a unique story. Each represents a people, a history, a culture, and a set of aspirations. Yet today, these flags are not standing apart; they are standing together, just as the students they represent learn together, grow together, and pursue their dreams together,” he stated. The High Commissioner emphasised the university’s responsibility to provide academic and professional training and to prepare students to thrive in a global environment where cross-cultural and cross-national cooperation is essential. He praised ATU for recognising the value that international students bring to the University community and for creating an environment where diversity is celebrated. Addressing international students, he encouraged them to embrace their role as ambassadors of cultural exchange and mutual understanding. He noted that students who pursue education outside their home countries gain valuable experiences that enable them to build friendships, challenge misconceptions, and strengthen relationships between nations. The diplomat also highlighted the longstanding friendship between Ghana and Sierra Leone, stressing the importance of educational exchanges in deepening cooperation and people-to-people relations across Africa. He further called on young Africans to view diversity as a source of strength and to build partnerships that contribute to the continent’s development and integration. “The students gathered here today represent the future of Africa. The relationships you build today will shape the partnerships, innovations, and solutions that Africa will need tomorrow,” he said. A major highlight of the programme was the symbolic raising of the flags of participating countries by ambassadors and diplomatic representatives, demonstrating the shared commitment to friendship, cooperation, and peaceful coexistence. H.E. Faculty of Applied Sciences Holds Two-Day Seminar and Workshop on Academic Development and Digital Engagement

The Faculty of Applied Sciences has organised a two-day seminar and workshop to strengthen faculty engagement, improve academic processes, and enhance institutional performance. The programme was held at the ATU FlexLab on Monday, 2nd, and Tuesday, 3rd June 2026, bringing together academic and administrative staff for capacity-building, knowledge sharing, and strategic discussions on faculty development. The opening ceremony was chaired by the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Nana Yaw Asabere, who underscored the importance of continuous faculty improvement and regular review of academic progress within the University system. He emphasised the need for stronger collaboration among institutions and highlighted the importance of partnerships in advancing teaching, research, and innovation. A guest professor from the University of Johannesburg, Prof. Oluwafemi Adebo, delivered a presentation emphasising the importance of research output, academic collaboration, and institutional visibility. His presentation also touched on the role of innovation in academic development, with reference to advancements in food processing technology and research collaboration. The programme featured a series of presentations and performance review sessions focusing on core academic activities, institutional impact, and overall faculty output. Key highlights presented included student population figures of 7,361, academic staff strength of 183, five academic departments, 57 high-impact publications, 69 full-time faculty members, and eight ongoing master’s programmes. He further encouraged the use of digital platforms such as Microsoft Teams to enhance online training, academic coordination, and administrative communication. Another key session was facilitated by Prof. George Osei-Adjei, who presented promotion procedures and administrative processes for academic staff. He outlined the required steps, documentation, and institutional frameworks necessary for successful promotion applications, while emphasising the importance of structured academic development pathways. Prof. Felix Abekah Botchway, a Senior Lecturer at the Department, provided insights into promotion-related processes. He explained the application requirements, procedural expectations, and the importance of adhering to institutional guidelines. He further highlighted the role of workshops, committees, and structured academic support systems in strengthening staff development. The seminar also emphasised the need for external academic support systems and collaborative structures to enhance institutional efficiency and professional growth. Participants described the programme as insightful and timely, noting that it provided practical guidance on academic progression, institutional performance evaluation, and digital transformation in teaching and administration.

Artificial Intelligence Takes Centre Stage in Administrative Capacity Building

ATU Strengthens Administrative Efficiency Through Artificial Intelligence Training for StaffThe Management of Accra Technical University has organised a two-day intensive Artificial Intelligence (AI) training programme for administrative staff as part of efforts to strengthen digital transformation, innovation, and operational efficiency within the University’s administrative system. The training programme, which took place on Thursday, 28th and Friday, 29th May 2026, brought together administrative staff from various departments and units of the University to build their practical knowledge and capacity in the application of Artificial Intelligence tools for administrative and institutional development. The programme was facilitated by renowned technology and digital transformation expert, Dr. David King Boison, with support from Ms. Shanna Takrama. Participants were introduced to the Virtual Productivity Framework (VPF), an advanced AI-driven ecosystem designed to improve productivity, communication, research, administrative workflow, and digital collaboration. The training focused on innovative AI platforms within the VPF ecosystem, including Nyame Mind, Nyame Nexus, Mantix, Bio-Sankofa, Obibini, and VPF-Edu360. Speaking during the training sessions, Dr. Boison emphasised the increasing importance of Artificial Intelligence in modern institutional administration, stressing that universities must embrace emerging technologies to remain competitive, efficient, and globally relevant. He explained that AI has become a transformative tool capable of improving decision-making, communication systems, document processing, data management, and overall workplace productivity. According to him, equipping staff with practical AI skills is essential for institutions seeking to adapt to the rapidly evolving digital landscape. A major highlight of the training programme was the practical sessions on AI prompt engineering, where participants were trained on how to become professional AI prompt engineers capable of effectively interacting with AI systems to achieve accurate, efficient, and high-quality outputs. The facilitators guided participants through hands-on demonstrations and interactive exercises on prompting, communicating effectively with AI systems, and utilising AI tools strategically for administrative tasks, research support, content generation, data analysis, and institutional communication. Participants expressed appreciation to the University Management for organising the programme, describing the training as timely, practical, insightful, and highly beneficial. Many participants noted that the knowledge and skills acquired would significantly enhance their productivity and improve their ability to adapt to emerging technological trends within higher education administration. The training forms part of Accra Technical University’s broader commitment to digital transformation, capacity building, and innovation-driven administration in line with global technological advancements and contemporary higher education practices.

ATU Leads China-Ghana Grain Safety Research

Accra Technical University has secured funding under China’s National Key Research and Development Programme to establish the China–Ghana Joint Laboratory for Food Security and Storage in partnership with local and international research institutions. The project brings together researchers from ATU, the University of Cape Coast, Jimei University, Jiangsu University, and Sinograin Chengdu Storage Research Institute Co., Ltd. The initiative seeks to improve grain quality and reduce post-harvest losses by developing advanced storage technologies suited to Ghana’s environmental conditions. The joint laboratory will focus on practical and affordable innovations, including intelligent grain-monitoring systems, early-warning pest and mold tools, improved grain preservation methods, and big data systems for grain safety monitoring. The project will target grains such as maize, rice, and sorghum. As part of the project, demonstration sites, including one in Ghana, will be established to test and refine the technologies under real-life conditions while working closely with farmers and grain storage operators. The initiative is also expected to strengthen research and human resource capacity in Ghana by training researchers and students in modern grain storage and post-harvest management techniques. Selected students from ATU are expected to benefit from scholarship opportunities to pursue postgraduate studies in China.  Ghanaian researchers involved in the project will also undertake research activities in China for three to six months. The grant follows a partnership agreement recently signed between ATU and Jimei University to establish the “China-Ghana Grain Safety and Storage Joint Laboratory” under the Joint Laboratory Programme between China and African countries launched by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China in 2023. Under the agreement, the participating institutions will share facilities and collaborate through staff exchanges, joint research activities, educational programmes, and international publications. The institutions also agreed to jointly seek additional international funding to sustain the laboratory’s operations and expand future collaborative projects between Ghana and China. The agreement was signed on behalf of ATU by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Amevi Acakpovi, and the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Felix Kutsanedzie. The partnership agreement is expected to run for an initial period of three years, subject to approval by China’s Ministry of Science and Technology. Beyond improving grain preservation systems, the initiative is expected to contribute to food security, agricultural sustainability, and stronger international research collaboration while strengthening Ghana’s research capacity in food systems management.

ATU Hosts Tamale Technical University Delegation for Study Tour on Planning Systems and Institutional Development

The Planning Department of Accra Technical University hosted a delegation from Tamale Technical University for a two-day study tour to strengthen institutional collaboration and share practical experiences in university planning, academic scheduling, data management, and strategic development. The delegation, comprising Mr. Alhassan, Planning Officer, and Miss Dibe Abdul-Rahaman, Assistant Planning Officer, was received by Ms. Gifty Ahwireng, Deputy Registrar in Charge of Planning at ATU and her team. The study tour formed part of efforts to promote collaboration among higher educational institutions while creating a platform for knowledge sharing and professional learning in university administration. Opening the engagement, Ms. Ahwireng introduced the visitors to the structure and operations of the University’s Planning Department. She highlighted its role in institutional development, policy implementation, and strategic decision-making. The Director of the Quality Assurance and Academic Directorate (QAAD), Prof. Phyllis Otu, also welcomed the delegation and gave a brief overview of the Directorate’s responsibilities, particularly its role in maintaining academic standards, quality assurance processes, and supporting institutional effectiveness. The two-day programme featured presentations and practical sessions on Academic Calendar Development, Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) Data Management, Course Mounting, Academic Scheduling, Enrollment and Statistics, Programme Evaluation, and Strategic Plan Mid-Term Review. During the sessions, officers from the Planning Department demonstrated the processes involved in preparing the University’s academic calendar, coordinating academic activities, and managing institutional data for reporting and compliance purposes. Discussions also focused on measures used to prevent timetable clashes and ensure effective coordination of academic programmes across the University. The delegation was also taken through practical demonstrations on timetable preparation, where participants observed how course information, lecturer details, programme schedules, and student enrollment figures are entered and managed within the scheduling system before plotting timetable begins. The Planning Department further demonstrated how lecture halls are allocated based on class sizes and programme requirements to ensure effective use of space and conducive learning conditions for students. As part of the engagement, the Tamale Technical University delegation also shared insights into the operations of their Planning Department, including their involvement in strategic planning, graduation processes, and statistical analysis within the University. They mentioned that the Head of Planning is on the Academic Board, but in Attendance. Speaking during the closing session, Ms. Ahwireng expressed appreciation to the visiting delegation for their active participation. She emphasised the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing among tertiary institutions in Ghana. On behalf of the delegation, Mr. Alhassan thanked the Planning Department of ATU for the warm reception and valuable practical knowledge shared throughout the study tour, while Miss Dibe Abdul-Rahaman commended the professionalism demonstrated during the engagement. Following the sessions, the delegation was taken to the office of the Vice-Chancellor, where they paid a courtesy call on him. During the visit, the Vice-Chancellor presented gifts to the delegation as a symbol of appreciation and institutional goodwill. ATU Signs MoUs with Four Industry Partners to Expand Practical Training and Career Opportunities

Accra Technical University (ATU) has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Choice International Forwarding Company Limited, Kuri Motors, National Council for Children and Youth Development (NaCCYD), and Unidor Limited in a move aimed at strengthening industry collaboration and creating more opportunities for practical learning, internships, and graduate employability. The agreements were signed on 19th May 2026 in the University’s Council Chamber as part of ATU’s broader commitment to preparing students with industry-relevant skills and improving the transition from the classroom into professional practice. Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of ATU, Prof. Amevi Acakpovi, described the partnerships as an important step towards deepening academia-industry engagement. He noted that the collaborations would expose students to real-world work environments through practical training, internships, and employment pathways, while supporting the University’s mission to produce highly skilled graduates. He further explained that the initiative aligns with global and continental development priorities, particularly United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 4 and 8, and African Union Agenda 2063. One of the agreements signed was with Kuri Motors, which focuses on bridging the gap between classroom teaching and the automobile industry. The collaboration will expose students to professional engine refurbishment, advanced vehicle diagnostics using modern technologies, and practical automotive training. According to the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Kuri Motors, Junaid Limann, who was excited about the MoU, said the collaboration will open avenues and make students abreast of current trends of mobility, particularly e-mobility. The partnership with the National Council for Children and Youth Development (NaCCYD) extends beyond internship opportunities to include practical skills development, curriculum support, research collaboration, and community engagement activities. Under the agreement, both institutions will work together to organise seminars, workshops, exhibitions, and youth development initiatives while creating attachment opportunities for students across Engineering, Built Environment, Business, Applied Arts, and Science programmes. The collaboration also seeks to support knowledge transfer and prepare students with relevant practical experience and exposure to current industry practices. Director for Digital Skills and Technology, Mr. Moses Amgortey Tetteh, expressed his outfit’s readiness to work closely with the University to create opportunities that bridge academic learning and practical application. He noted that investing in skills development and youth empowerment remains central to the Council’s mandate and added that the partnership would provide students with valuable exposure, strengthen their readiness for the world of work, and contribute to national development efforts. Through its agreement with Choice International Forwarding Company Limited, ATU will strengthen pathways between education and professional practice in logistics and supply chain fields. The collaboration will create internship, industrial attachment, and employment opportunities for students and graduates, particularly those pursuing programs in Logistics and Transport, Procurement and Supply Chain Management, Marketing, and related disciplines. The arrangement also includes seminars, workshops, and guest lectures to improve industry readiness and support graduates’ transition into employment. Mr. Liang Jia Yao, Branch Manager for Choice International Forwarding Company Limited, said the partnership demonstrates the company’s commitment to practical education by exposing students to industry experience, promoting collaboration between academia and industry, and helping prepare graduates for the evolving logistics and supply chain sector. ATU’s partnership with Unidor Limited will focus on practical industry training in the built environment and furniture manufacturing sectors. The agreement provides opportunities for internships, collaborative research, curriculum enhancement, and industry exposure for both staff and students. It also seeks to strengthen applied learning through exhibitions, competitions, and structured training programmes that enable students to connect theoretical classroom knowledge with practical industrial experience and to gain exposure to developments in the built environment sector. In her remarks on behalf of the company, Madam Marilyn Abbey, Human Resource Manager of Unidor Limited, highlighted the company’s commitment to supporting technical education and nurturing the next generation of skilled professionals. The ceremonies were graced by members of the University Management, various Deans, and Heads of Department, who shared goodwill messages and expressed confidence that the partnerships would open new opportunities for students and strengthen the University’s efforts to deliver industry-driven education. ATU Partners Skills Bridge Ghana Foundation to Launch Green Readiness Badge Certification Programme

Accra Technical University (ATU) has entered a strategic partnership with Skills Bridge Ghana Foundation to promote green skills development and create opportunities for workers within Ghana’s informal sector. The collaboration was formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Green Readiness Badge Certification Programme: Pathway for a Green Pipeline on May 18, 2026, at the Council Chamber of the University. The partnership seeks to establish a practical and sustainable bridge between modern industrial advancements and the vast untapped potential of the informal workforce. Through customised competency-based training programmes, the Green Readiness Badge Certification Programme aims to transition informal sector workers into certified professionals with recognised qualifications under the National TVET Qualification Framework. In his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor of ATU, Prof. Amevi Acakpovi, welcomed the Skills Bridge delegation and expressed optimism about the partnership, describing it as timely and aligned with the University’s commitment to industry relevance, innovation, and sustainable development. He noted that as industries continue to evolve in response to environmental and technological changes, there is a need to equip workers with practical green competencies that will keep them relevant and competitive. Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of Skills Bridge Ghana Foundation, Mr. Charles Agyemang Prempeh, emphasized the importance of collaboration and collective impact. Quoting an African proverb, he stated, “If you want to go fast, go alone. But if you want to go far, go together.” He explained that the partnership with Accra Technical University reflects a shared commitment to empowering people through skills development, sustainability, and inclusive economic growth. Under the terms of the agreement, Accra Technical University will provide academic expertise and research support through the ATU Sustainable Energy Service Centre, including access to its modern laboratory infrastructure. Skills Bridge Ghana Foundation will contribute operational support, specialized training toolkits, and community mobilisation networks to ensure the effective implementation of the programme. The partnership adds to ATU’s growing list of strategic collaborations with industry and development-oriented organisations. Through such initiatives, the University continues to strengthen competency-based education, innovation, and workforce development while contributing meaningfully to national progress.
