The 2022 edition of the Ghana Technical University Students Association games came to a close on Saturday November 19 at the Alui Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale, and as expected, athletes of the Accra Technical University are swimming in medals, a testament to their stellar performance. Being the defending champions of the tournament, team ATU entered the competition with a target on their backs as the team to beat. How then did they fare in the hostile storm of a competition?
In team disciplines such as basketball, handball, volleyball, racket games and soccer, ATU’s men bulldozed their way through many of their contenders much to the delight of supporters. Even in bouts that they lost, the ATU men showed such resilience and sportsmanship that they gained the respect of neutral spectators and opponents alike. The women however had their work cut out for them as it was obvious early on that they were swimming from the deep end. At any point in the competition, ATU athletes had the option to throw in the proverbial towel. Instead, they used the towel to wipe the tears and sweat off their faces and kept going.
The perseverance paid off and by the close of the games, Accra Technical University finished with twenty-five shiny medals around the necks of the athletes. With 11 gold medals, 10 silver and 4 bronze medals, ATU’s athletes were second runners-up behind Takoradi Technical University and Tamale Technical University (the host).
As Conrad Hilton said, “Successful men and women keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don’t quit”. Team ATU hopes to clinch the ultimate in the 3rd edition of the games to be hosted by Cape Coast Technical University, as it readies itself to put up an even impressive performance in 2024.
