The 2023 Kumasi Debate Open kicked off on Tuesday, May 23 and climaxed on Saturday the 28th. Accra Technical University once again shattered ceilings as they won 5 medals in the competition that had students from universities across 4 African countries duking it out to prove their argumentative prowess.

Among participants from Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia and Kenya, ATU’s Michael Koranteng and Samuel Aduama Yeboah won medals for Best and 2nd Best Public Speaking Judges respectively. Michael Koranteng who led the ATU debate team was also awarded 2nd Best Debate Judge. Mehetabel Aquinas Gyebi came 5th in the same category and Samuel Iwuozor Chizaram was awarded 10th Best Debate Judge. This comes off the back of another massive win at the Heritage Debate which was held as part of the University of Ghana’s 75th anniversary celebration. ATU ran through UG and three other universities to claim the ultimate prize then.

Speaking on their stellar performance at the Kumasi Debate Open, Michael Koranteng disclosed that even though the ATU Debate Society is barely a year old, they are determined to excel on the highest stages of debating and public speaking. He also expressed gratitude towards the office of the Vice-Chancellor and the Dean of Students Affairs for their unwavering support.

The ATU Debate society is expected to extend its winning streak during the Liberian National Universities Debate Championship in August.
