ATU Holds First CEOs Lecture Series with a Focus on Industry-Academia Collaboration
Accra Technical University’s 75th-anniversary celebration reached new heights with the inaugural CEOs Lecture Series. Themed “75 Years of Impacting Society and Driving Innovation,” the event took place on April 25, 2024, at the university’s auditorium. The event featured esteemed speakers including Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies; Nana Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, CEO of Kantanka Group of Companies; and Mr. Jeffrey Agyepong, Head of Youth and Inclusive Banking at Access Bank, Ghana. Together, they shared strategies and insights aimed at fostering collaborative efforts between higher education institutions and businesses. They also called on students at Accra Technical University (ATU) to develop their innovative skills and leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address the myriads of challenges faced by the African continent. Dr. Agyepong, represented by Chief Investment Officer Mr. Noah Gyimah, emphasised that innovation is crucial for tackling Africa’s socio-economic challenges. He highlighted the potential of AI in transforming sectors such as healthcare, poverty alleviation, education, infrastructure, and technology. Mr. Gyimah highlighted the abundance of opportunities available and encouraged young people to equip themselves, identify the value chain of specific innovations, and position themselves strategically. He also urged tertiary institutions to intentionally incorporate skills training into their curricula, ensuring it aligns with industry needs. He mentioned that the Jospong Group is implementing a similar initiative, the Technician Training Curriculum, designed to equip individuals with technical skills to address practical problems. The lecture underscored the vital role of youth and innovation in driving sustainable development across the continent, inspiring students to embrace technological advancements and creative problem-solving.

Outreach Committee, Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) Department Embark on Outreach, Donate Items Worth GHc12,000.00
In a commendable effort to bolster educational opportunities for underprivileged second-cycle institutions in the Greater Accra Region, the Outreach Committee of Accra Technical University, in collaboration with the Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) Department, embarked on an education outreach and donation exercise on Friday, April 12, 2024. The initiative kicked off at the Teshie Technical Training Institute and concluded at Teshie St. John’s Senior High School, both in the Ledzokuku Municipal District. The ATU team took students through career guidance and counselling, focusing on the Sciences. Students had the opportunity to experience chemistry, biochemistry, biology, and physics lab practices as SLT Department students conducted demonstrations. Throughout the day-long endeavour, the team distributed a wide array of essential items valued at GH₵12,000. Among the provisions were stationery, sanitary items like brushes, dustbins, gloves, tissue rolls, and other educational necessities. The outreach not only underscored the university’s commitment to fostering community engagement but also highlighted the significance of collaborative efforts in advancing educational equity. Speaking on behalf of the Outreach Committee, the committee’s chairman, Mr. Kojo Ayittey, stressed the importance of extending educational support beyond the university’s walls. “The SLT Department is all out to encourage our young scientists, especially females, to consider prospects and the possible impact of their study. The future of our country lies in their hands,” Dr. Phyllis Otu, Head of the Department, said. The beneficiaries expressed profound gratitude for the generosity extended to them. Mrs. Mabel Asare, the Principal of Teshie Technical Institute, lauded the initiative’s impact on her institution. “These donations are invaluable to us, especially underprivileged schools like ours. They ease the burden on us and ensure that we can fully focus on our core mandate,” she remarked. This initiative aligns with Pillar 3 of the ATU Strategic Plan which emphasises industry and community engagement.
Educational Technology Accessibility: ATU Ag. VC Joins Others to Forge Path to Inclusive Education
The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Accra Technical University (ATU), Professor Amevi Acakpovi, has joined a delegation comprising Vice-Chancellors from some Ghanaian universities, alongside the Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and representatives from Atlantic Holdings, MTN, and jp.ik (Porto), Portugal, for a pivotal summit on educational technology. The working visit, which was organised by Coral Reef, Portugal, centred on regularising digital technology access, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic, necessitating a significant move towards blended learning models across higher education institutions. The team had the chance to tour both the jp.ik AI and digital solutions manufacturing plant in Porto, as well as their facility dedicated to assembling computers and laptops. Anticipated outcomes from this collaboration include the development of a cutting-edge AI-enabled laptop, a substantial portion of which will be assembled in Ghana. These laptops will be accompanied by discounted data packages and pre-loaded with educational content tailored for tertiary students, particularly benefiting ATU students and beyond. In addition, by partnering with the Student Loan Trust Fund and Absa Bank, the collaboration will ensure that students requiring financial assistance receive the necessary support to procure these laptops, thereby enhancing their learning experience. The collaboration also aims to establish a state-of-the-art AI lab at both ATU and the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), with plans for expansion to other tertiary institutions across Ghana. Enhanced training programmes for faculty on digital delivery methods are also in the pipeline, underscoring the commitment to fostering a digitally inclusive educational landscape in the country. The involvement of the Acting Vice-Chancellor in this summit aligns with ATU’s motto of integrity, creativity, and excellence. The overarching goal is to narrow the digital divide, fortify digital educational infrastructure, enhance delivery quality, and offer students and stakeholders an enriched and sustainable experience in blended learning modalities.

Accra Technical University’s Guidance and Counselling and Career Development Unit took proactive steps towards tackling mental health concerns by organising a seminar centred on suicide prevention. Held at the University Auditorium on March 21, 2024, the seminar garnered participation from junior staff members across the university. The Director, Guidance and Counselling, Dr. Evelyn Bentil, in her address, underscored the programme’s significance within the institution’s framework, expressing appreciation to all attendees for their involvement. The seminar aimed to equip participants with essential knowledge and resources to identify and prevent instances of suicide within the university community. Expert speakers engaged the audience with insightful discussions on recognising warning signs, providing effective support, and accessing appropriate resources for those struggling with suicidal thoughts. The seminar emphasised the importance of fostering open dialogues surrounding mental health,highlighting empathy, understanding, and timely intervention in potentially life-threatening situations.Alongside the seminar, the university’s Health Screening Committee collaborated with representativesfrom the school clinic to offer comprehensive health screenings. This proactive measure allowedattendees not only to engage in mental health discussions but also to take tangible steps towardsprioritising their overall well-being. The event underscored the university’s commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive environmentwhere mental health concerns are addressed urgently and compassionately. Accra Technical University’s debate team emerged victorious in a riveting showdown at the ATU 75th Anniversary Debate Competition, clinching a resounding 3:1 split decision and securing the prestigious legacy trophy in an electrifying finale against the University of Ghana on March 12, 2024, at the ATU Auditorium. Accra Technical University showcased unparalleled competence and resilience throughout the competition, navigating through challenging opponents such as the University of Cape Coast and Takoradi University in the preliminary rounds with unwavering determination. The climactic battle against the University of Ghana (UG) was nothing short of thrilling, highlighting the depth of knowledge and prowess possessed by both teams. However, it was team ATU, representing the Closing Opposition (CO), that ultimately outshone their counterparts from UG, who debated as the Opening Government (OG), on the topic of “An Intelligent but Poor Student Would Pursue Vocational Education Over a Traditional College Education.” Certificates and medals were awarded to deserving participants in recognition of their dedication and excellence in the art of debate. Professor Felix Y.H. Kutsanedzie Kutsanedzie Appointed Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor
Accra Technical University is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Felix Y.H. Kutsanedzie, as the Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor effective Monday, March 11th, 2024. The decision was made by the University’s Governing Council during its 120th Regular Council Meeting held on March 7th and 8th 2024. Prof. Kutsanedzie, a distinguished scholar in the engineering, field brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role. He holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Agricultural Mechanization and Bio-Engineering from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Food and Biological Engineering from Jiangsu University (JU), China. Additionally, he holds an Advanced Diploma in Project Management from the Institute of Commercial Management, London, UK. As a professor in agricultural and biosystems engineering at Accra Technical University, Prof. Kutsanedzie has demonstrated his commitment to advancing education and research. With twelve years of teaching experience at the tertiary level, he has mentored countless students and contributed significantly to the academic community. His research interests span many areas, including microelectromechanical machines (MEMS), sensor fabrication, nanomaterial synthesis, bioenergy, food processing, and project management. Prof. Kutsanedzie’s leadership extends beyond the classroom and laboratory. He has served in various administrative roles, including Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Head of the Research and Innovation Centre and Drone and Innovative Technologies Development Centre. He has also been actively involved in committees and professional organizations, such as the American Society for Agricultural and Biological Engineers, the National Black Engineers Society, and the Society for Biological Engineers. In addition to his academic and administrative contributions, Prof. Kutsanedzie is a prolific researcher and writer, with numerous publications in reputable journals and conferences. He has also served as an editor and reviewer for prestigious publications, further enhancing his reputation as a leading expert in his field. In his new role as Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kutsanedzie will continue to uphold the university’s commitment to excellence in education, research, and community engagement. His vision, leadership, and dedication will undoubtedly contribute to the continued success and advancement of Accra Technical University.
Accra Technical University Embarks on Clean-up Exercise

Accra Technical University has embarked on a remarkable initiative to enhance the beauty of the ATU and Kwame Memorial Park as part of its 75th-anniversary celebrations on Friday, March 22, 2024. Driven by the 75th Anniversary Planning Committee in collaboration with the Department of Networking and Community Engagement, and with support from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, the initiative aimed to underscore the university’s dedication to environmental stewardship and community engagement. Chairperson for the 75th Anniversary Planning Committee, Professor Alice Constance Mensah, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stressing the importance of giving back to the community. “This clean-up campaign not only restores the memorial park’s splendour but also strengthens our ties with the community,” she said. Students, faculty members, and volunteers eagerly joined forces to participate in the clean-up campaign. Armed with gloves, machetes, dustpans, waste bins, brooms, and a tricycle, they worked diligently to remove litter, clear debris, and rejuvenate the spaces within the university and park’s precincts. Prof. Mensah highlighted the importance of individuals and the public keeping the memorial park clean when they visit. She emphasised the value of environmental stewardship and asked everyone to develop the habit of maintaining the place’s cleanliness. Prof. Mensah also used the opportunity to inspire other institutions, urging them to emulate Accra Technical University’s efforts to uphold tidiness and create a friendly environment. As the clean-up drew to a close, Professor Mensah expressed her heartfelt gratitude to all participants for their sincere dedication and hard work. “Today’s event embodies the spirit of unity and service that defines Accra Technical University,” she stated. “Let us carry forward this momentum as we continue to make the celebration of the 75th-anniversary celebration,” she remarked.
