NEW PARTNERSHIP CONNECTS ATU STUDENTS TO CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Accra Technical University (ATU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office and African American Male Education and Network Development (A2MEND) to expand international learning and academic opportunities for students. The partnership, signed on August 14, 2026, establishes a framework for the three institutions to collaborate through the Pan African Virtual College (PAVC), an initiative designed to connect students, faculty and institutions in Ghana and California through an Africa-centred approach to education. The partnership opens the door to opportunities including study abroad and student exchanges, virtual learning and exchanges, joint seminars and other academic programmes for ATU students. It will also promote curriculum development, faculty and staff exchanges, joint research and professional development. The initiative is expected to give students greater exposure to international learning while providing opportunities to acquire additional knowledge and skills relevant to the changing demands of the global workforce. Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of ATU, Prof. Amevi Acakpovi, welcomed the partnership as another opportunity for Africans to acquire relevant skills and knowledge. He pledged the University’s full support towards making the collaboration successful and encouraged students to take advantage of the programmes that will emerge from the partnership, particularly opportunities that could enable them to acquire additional certification alongside their studies at ATU. Former President of the California Community Colleges Board of Governors and current Board member, Pamela Haynes, described the signing as a historic moment in the shared journey of the participating institutions. Drawing inspiration from the Akan concept of Sankofa, which means to “return and fetch it,” she presented the partnership as an opportunity for people of African descent to reconnect with their roots while drawing on the valuable lessons of the past to build the future. According to her, the partnership goes beyond academic cooperation. It represents an opportunity to strengthen an African-centred approach to education and deepen connections between Africa and its diaspora. She acknowledged the contribution of A2MEND, the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office and their Ghanaian partners towards bringing the Pan African Virtual College initiative to fruition. The President of A2MEND, Dr. Edward Bush, said the partnership advances the organisation’s mission of expanding access to international educational opportunities, particularly for Black students and Ghanaians, by addressing some of the barriers that have traditionally limited access. He said the initiative would help position students to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to address challenges within their communities and contribute meaningfully to development. According to him, programmes developed under the partnership will be relevant to the African context, research-centred and responsive to workforce needs, with areas such as climate change, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity among the fields to be explored. The Pro Vice-Chancellor of ATU, Professor Felix Kutsanedzie also welcomed the initiative, particularly the effort to make participation financially accessible to Ghanaian students. He noted that charging applicable fees in Ghanaian currency would be important in encouraging wider student participation. The MoU provides an umbrella framework for cooperation among ATU, the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office and A2MEND. Specific programmes, including exchanges, online courses, research activities and other academic opportunities, will be developed through subsequent implementation arrangements. The California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office provides statewide leadership and coordination for the California Community Colleges system and supports initiatives in student success, innovation, collaboration and international partnerships. African American Male Education and Network Development (A2MEND) is a non-profit organisation made up of community college faculty and administrators who volunteer their scholarly and professional expertise to promote institutional change. The organisation has worked to improve educational outcomes for men of colour within the California Community Colleges system and, under the new partnership, serves as a strategic convener and implementation partner supporting educational opportunity, Pan-African collaboration and institutional partnerships. ATU Crowned South-East Zone Champions of Graphic Business Tertiary Business Sense Challenge

Accra Technical University (ATU) has added another proud moment to its growing record of practical and industry-focused education after students from the ATU Business School emerged champions of the South-East Zone of the eighth Graphic Business Tertiary Business Sense Challenge (TBSC).ATU finished the three-way zonal final with 40 points, ahead of Pentecost University with 32 points and defending champions, the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), with 29.5 points.The result placed ATU at the top of a competition that challenged students on business knowledge, quantitative analysis, problem-solving and decision-making. For the ATU Business School, the performance also offered a strong showing of its students against some of the country’s established business schools. A difficult start, a strong comebackATU’s road to the title was far from straightforward. The team suffered a narrow 42–38 defeat to Academic City University in the quarter-final and could have exited the competition at that point. Their performance, however, earned them a place in the semi-finals as the best-performing losing team. That second opportunity changed the course of ATU’s campaign. The students returned to defeat Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) 26–17.5 in the semi-final, setting up a final against Pentecost University and UGBS.The comeback would eventually become one of the defining parts of ATU’s campaign: a team that entered the semi-finals as the best loser would leave as South-East Zone champions. Finding their way into the finalATU did not have the strongest start in the final either. In the opening round, which covered basic and advanced business concepts, ATU scored nine points, behind Pentecost University and UGBS, which both scored 13. The response came in the quantitative and applied analysis round. Faced with calculations involving equipment cost and depreciation, ATU picked up all six points available, while UGBS scored 0.5 and Pentecost University did not score.The next round moved from calculations to business judgement. Using an article on bank staff fraud published in the Graphic Business, the students had to examine the issues and make recommendations. All three teams finished the round with 10 points.ATU and UGBS then added six points each in the true-or-false round, while Pentecost University scored three.By the time the competition reached the final riddles round, ATU had put itself in a position to win and the students finished strongly.ATU scored nine points in the final round. Pentecost University added six, while UGBS failed to score. The result took ATU to 40 points, securing the South-East title ahead of Pentecost University and UGBS. Putting the ATU Business School on displayThe title comes at an important time for the ATU Business School as it continues to build an identity around practical business education and the preparation of graduates for industry.What happened during the competition gives that ambition something concrete to point to.The students had to work with figures, recall business concepts, interpret information, solve problems quickly and apply what they knew to business situations. These are also abilities expected of graduates entering today’s workplace.Their performance therefore gives the University another opportunity to show the outcomes of the work taking place within the Business School from the classroom and student preparation to the guidance provided by faculty.It also places ATU in good company. The final brought its students face-to-face with UGBS, the defending zonal champions, and Pentecost University. ATU came out with the highest score. For a Business School that is building its profile, results like this help tell its story. From second chance to championsThere is also something memorable about how the title was won.ATU had already lost once. The team had seen its chances of progressing reduced to qualification as the best loser. But when another opportunity came, the students grabbed it.They beat GCTU in the semi-final and followed that performance by finishing ahead of two strong opponents in the final.ATU, Pentecost University and UGBS will represent the South-East Zone at the national competition.This time, they have their eyes on the ultimate prize. The South-East title is secured, but the journey is not over. The national stage awaits, and Team ATU is ready to make its mark.

ATU Explores AI Solutions to Enhance Student Experience and Service Delivery

Accra Technical University (ATU) has taken another step towards digital transformation by exploring Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions aimed at improving student experience, communication and service delivery across the University. The initiative formed part of a specialised AI workshop organised by the Directorate of Public Affairs in partnership with Cisco and IT Horizons on 25 June 2026 at the ATU Akwaaba Lodge Conference Facility. The workshop brought together members of Senior Management, Directors and representatives from various units of the University. Addressing participants during the opening session, the Pro Vice-Chancellor of ATU, Prof. Felix Kutsanedzie, emphasised the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence on education, business and everyday life. He noted that institutions that embrace innovation are better positioned to remain relevant and responsive to the needs of their stakeholders. He explained that AI presents opportunities for universities to improve communication, strengthen student engagement and enhance efficiency in administrative processes. He therefore encouraged participants to develop a better understanding of the technology and its practical applications within higher education. The Deputy Registrar and Director of Public Affairs, Ms. Fausta K. Ganaa, highlighted the importance of innovation and digital transformation in enhancing institutional effectiveness and improving the student experience. She encouraged administrative leaders to adopt proactive approaches in gathering relevant information and disseminating timely, student-centred and newsworthy institutional content that keeps students informed, engaged and connected to activities, opportunities and developments within the university community. The workshop also focused on how AI-powered solutions can improve interactions between universities and their stakeholders. A presentation by the Solutions Architect at IT Horizons, Mr. Joshua Borlu, demonstrated how intelligent systems can support customer service, automate responses to enquiries and provide easier access to information.Using practical examples, participants were taken through the ways AI can assist students and staff by providing real-time support and improving access to university services. The session also highlighted how data and automation can support faster and more informed decision-making. Another session examined the use of smart workplace technologies to improve collaboration and productivity. Facilitated by Mr. Borlu and the Client Relations Manager of IT Horizons, Ms. Janet Amo, the presentation showcased digital tools designed to support meetings, teamwork and communication in modern work environments. A live demonstration of an AI-powered response platform developed for ATU attracted significant interest from participants. The platform showed how students, staff, prospective applicants and other stakeholders could receive instant responses to enquiries and gain quicker access to essential university information. Discussions that followed centred on opportunities for implementation and the University’s readiness to adopt AI-driven solutions. ATU Unveils Strategic Plan for 2026–2030

Accra Technical University (ATU) has launched its five-year Strategic Plan, outlining the vision and direction of the University from 2026 to 2030. The event was held on April 7, 2026, at the University Auditorium. Speaking at the ceremony, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Professor Ernest Kofi Abotsi, urged the University community to take the plan seriously and ensure it is fully implemented. He cautioned against treating it as a document that will sit on the shelf without impact. According to him, the success of the plan depends on the collective effort of staff and management, stressing that every member of the University must understand their role and contribute towards achieving the outlined goals. He added that beyond the excitement of the launch, the University must be ready to account for its progress when the plan is reviewed in the future. The Director of Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education, Dr. Emmanuel Newman, described the plan as a clear roadmap for transformation and growth. He noted that the future of technical universities lies in their ability to move beyond theory and focus on practical skills, innovation, and product development. He stressed that institutions like ATU must produce graduates who can solve problems, create jobs, and contribute to industrial development. He further highlighted the importance of aligning education with industry needs, adding that employers today are looking for competence, adaptability, and innovation, not just certificates. Dr. Newman also pointed to opportunities in areas such as artificial intelligence, digital transformation, renewable energy, and entrepreneurship, urging the University to position itself to take advantage of these trends. He encouraged stronger collaboration with industry and assured the University of government support in implementing the plan, while emphasising that the true value of the strategy will be seen in its execution and impact. The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Amevi Ackapovi, in his presentation, outlined the University’s renewed focus on driving excellence through competency-based, industry-aligned education. He stated that ATU will strengthen research, innovation, and entrepreneurship, while equipping both staff and students with future-ready skills. He added that the University will also deepen strategic partnerships and enhance its global visibility as part of efforts to position ATU as a leading technical university in Africa. The Strategic Plan (2026–2030) serves as a roadmap to guide the University’s growth over the next five years. It builds on the previous plan while responding to new challenges and opportunities in higher education and industry. The document is anchored on seven key pillars, including competency-based teaching and learning, digital transformation and modern infrastructure, quality assurance and institutional excellence, industry-driven research and innovation, staff development and welfare, strategic partnerships and visibility, and green technologies and sustainability. These pillars are designed to strengthen teaching, promote innovation, improve infrastructure, and enhance the overall impact of the University.

Prof. Acakpovi Invested as ATU Vice-Chancellor, Commits to Leadership That Listens

Accra Technical University (ATU) has formally invested Professor Amevi Acakpovi as its second substantive Vice-Chancellor, marking a significant chapter in the university’s journey as a fully-fledged tertiary institution. The colourful ceremony, which was well attended, brought together dignitaries, directors, corporate partners, staff, alumni, and students to witness the historic occasion. Professor Acakpovi, who previously served as Acting Vice-Chancellor, has already led the University through important milestones in academics, staff development, strategic partnerships, and infrastructure improvement. His investiture now confirms his mandate to steer the affairs of the university going forward. Addressing the gathering, Professor Acakpovi expressed gratitude to the University Council and the entire ATU community for the trust placed in him. He acknowledged that the appointment comes not only with honour but also with responsibility and assured the university of his readiness to lead with humility and purpose. He emphasised his commitment to a leadership style that listens, engages, and values the contributions of staff and students. He shared the strategic direction of the university, which is drawn from ATU’s strategic plan and will guide management decisions over the next five years. Key focus areas under his leadership include skills-based and future-ready teaching and learning, digital transformation, modern infrastructure, quality assurance and compliance, applied research and innovation, staff development and welfare, strong partnerships, and sustainability through green technologies. He noted that these priorities are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and are expected to have a positive impact on both the university and society. Professor Acakpovi described the strategic pillars as clear and practical commitments, supported by defined implementation plans and monitoring systems. He also called on the university community to support the administration, describing staff and students as the backbone of the institution and the custodians of its values and standards. He reaffirmed his pledge to lead in a way that empowers people and supports their growth. The guest speaker, Professor George K. T. Oduro, urged the university community to work closely with the Vice-Chancellor to achieve the shared vision of ATU. He stressed the importance of allowing systems to function effectively within the framework of the Technical Universities Act, 2016 (Act 922), noting that strong systems are essential for protecting academic life and integrity. In a speech delivered on behalf of the Deputy Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, emphasis was placed on strengthening collaboration between industry and academia. The message encouraged the Vice-Chancellor to build a university that remains closely linked to industry while putting systems in place to support staff and students. It noted that such partnerships help students succeed and drive national development. With his formal investiture now complete, Professor Ackapovi begins his tenure with a clear message of inclusive leadership. His pledge to listen, engage, and work closely with staff and students sets the tone for the next phase of ATU’s growth, as the university moves forward with shared responsibility and a common vision for progress.

ATU 10th Anniversary Celebration – Call for Logo Design Submissions

Accra Technical University (ATU) will celebrate its 10th anniversary since attaining university status under the theme “Celebrating a Decade of Transformation: Honouring Our Polytechnic Heritage, Embracing Our University Future.” To mark this milestone, the university is seeking a commemorative logo that captures the essence of ATU and celebrates its achievements over the years. The proposed logo should be simple, innovative, and easily recognisable, conveying a clear message of strength and unity. It must also be suitable for use across various media platforms, including print and digital formats, as well as on official merchandise. In the spirit of inclusiveness, the Anniversary Planning Committee seeks to engage all stakeholders of the University in this celebration. In line with this objective, individuals or groups are invited to submit logo designs for the anniversary. The competition is open to all members of the ATU community, including staff, students, faculty, and alumni.  How to Enter: Submissions may come from individuals or groups. Designs must reflect ATU colours, its values, and its mission. Designs must be in JPG format with a minimum resolution of 1280 x 960 and be sent in size A4 (21cm x 29.7 cm) by email to [email protected] Designs must be accompanied by a text file explaining the design rationale and considerations for the logo (shape, colour specifications, font, etc.) in no more than 100 words. Designs (JPG) and explanatory text file (Word) must be submitted by email to [email protected] The email must include the name, phone number, and any national ID of the proposer or group leader and the capacity in which the submission is being made (staff, student, faculty, or alumni). Only one entry will be accepted from an individual or group.   Please Note: No submission fee is required. The designer of the logo retains liability for any issues arising regarding the originality and authenticity of the design. The winning design will be checked with trademark databases for this purpose. ATU Signs Contract to Expand ICT Block to Eight Floors

Accra Technical University (ATU) has signed a significant contract with FT Global Investment Limited to expand the University’s ICT Block from four floors to eight. The agreement, which was formalised at a brief ceremony in the Council Chamber, represents a significant investment in ATU’s technological future and growing academic needs. Speaking at the signing, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Amevi Acakpovi, stated that the project has become crucial due to the steady increase in student enrollment and the introduction of new, technology-driven programmes. “Our current ICT Block can no longer meet the demand. This expansion will give students and staff a modern space for hands-on training, research, and digital innovation,” he stated. He urged the contractor to deliver the project on schedule and reaffirmed management’s full support throughout the construction period. The Managing Director of FT Global Investment Limited, Dr. Issah Mohammed, thanked ATU for the confidence placed in his company. He assured the University community that the project will be delivered to a high standard. “We will provide a quality, fully integrated building that ATU will be proud of,” he said.Construction is expected to begin in the first week of January 2026 and is anticipated to take approximately 18 months to complete. Upon completion, the new eight-storey ICT Block will feature additional computer laboratories, digital lecture theatres, administrative and academic offices, and enhanced ICT infrastructure to support modern teaching and learning. Present at the ceremony were the Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor, the Acting Registrar, and Directors of Finance, Procurement, Works and Physical Development, and Public Affairs. Their presence underscored ATU’s collective commitment to the project. The expansion of the ICT Block marks another bold step in strengthening ATU’s position as a leader in technical and vocational education, providing students with the right environment to learn, innovate, and excel.
