Overview of the Department

The Department of Liberal Studies and Communication Technology (LSCT), formerly Language and Liberal Studies Department, is arguably one of the oldest departments in Accra Technical University. It is under the Faculty of Applied Arts. The department houses two major programmes in Public Relations with Digital Communication, Additionally, it is a servicing department and augments all other departments in the University in interdisciplinary courses such as Communication Skills, Business Communication, French, Research Methods, African Studies, Entrepreneurship, and Law.

While other departments provide students with specialized skills, the Department of Liberal Studies and Communication Technology, through its servicing courses, equip students with general skills in the ability to reason, speak, write, communicate, and make decisions independently and critically — transferrable skills for all careers and futures. The department is multidisciplinary and currently has sixteen (16) lecturers with diverse specialisation.

In addition to the liberal courses being serviced from the department, the department has started running Diploma in Public Relations. It is a two-year programme certified by NABPTEX.

 VISION

  • To equip students with knowledge-based, and problem-solving skills that will prepare them to reason, communicate meaningfully, and make critical decisions independently.
  • To engage and collaborate with other researchers and scholars in solution-based research in tackling real life problems.

 MISSION

To train students to develop a richer personal life, stronger preparation for active citizenship, and a capacity for life-long learning and research.

 OBJECTIVE

The objectives of the department are:

  • To expose students to appropriate language use for both oral and written communication.
  • To imbibe in students critical thinking skills, creative practice and a sense of moral and ethical responsibility towards the wellbeing of individuals, communities, and environments.
  • To equip students with basic legal and socio-economic competencies which would enable them to operate efficiently as professionals and experts in their fields of endeavour.
