Accra Technical University (ATU) has organised a two-day Innovation, Career, and Job Fair to promote creativity and career readiness among its students. The event, held on July 30 and 31 at the University’s campus, brought together leading companies and industries to provide students with practical exposure to the world of work, internship opportunities, and career guidance.
Top organisations such as Nestlé Ghana, Ghana National Petroleum Commission, Ghana Water Company, Electricity Company of Ghana, Stanbic Bank, Ghacem, Techno, Accra Brewery, Marriott Hotel Accra, Cassona Global Imaging, The Dieticians Kitchen, and Ennobled Foundation were present. The companies engaged students in discussions on career paths, reviewed CVs, and showcased the services and opportunities available in their sectors.
Speaking at the fair, ATU’s Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Amevi Acakpovi, commended the organisers and emphasised the critical role of industry-academia collaboration in preparing students for the job market. He highlighted the need for a shift from passive to active learning, where students are challenged to develop innovative ideas. He also reiterated the university’s dedication to entrepreneurship and innovation through the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Hub, which is designed to nurture students’ entrepreneurial potential.
Special Guest of Honour, Mr. David Eduaful, General Manager of Labadi Beach Hotel, encouraged students to leverage initiatives such as the fair to equip themselves with the skills needed for the evolving job market. He acknowledged the impact of technology on industry and the importance of aligning education with contemporary skill demands.
Guest Speaker Professor Jerry Samuel Kuma, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology, described collaboration between academia and industry as indispensable. He urged stronger partnerships to transform student ideas into practical solutions that contribute to national development. He also challenged students to become job creators rather than solely relying on employment opportunities.
A highlight of the event was the Innovation Awards, which recognised outstanding student projects. Entries showcased digital and AI-driven solutions such as a diabetes management application, AI-assisted vaccine transportation, AI-based nutritional assessment tools, and AI-powered online exam supervision systems.
The top award went to Julius Boakye, Moses Amartey Quaye, and Cephase Sodzedo for their AI-powered mobile application designed for real-time nutritional assessment and awareness. The innovative app transforms smartphones into smart food health coaches by analysing meals through photos, providing nutritional scores, and offering personalised AI-driven advice to encourage healthier eating habits. The winning team received cash prizes and certificates for their achievement.
