The Department of Building Technology at Accra Technical University has officially commissioned a number of projects completed by its final-year students on October 17, 2025, as part of their Higher National Diploma programme requirements.
The projects include a beautifully designed eco-friendly sitting area made from recycled pallets, and plastic bottles, as well as a newly replanted lawn area aimed at restoring soil fertility and beautifying the campus environment. The commissioning ceremony brought together key members of the University community, including the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Amevi Acakpovi, the Dean of the Faculty of Built Environment, Dr. Bernard Arthur-Aidoo, the Head of Department, Dr. Mark Pim-Wusu and Faculty members.

Professor Acakpovi commended the department for producing practical projects that address real needs on campus. He encouraged students to focus on initiatives that provide solutions to specific challenges within the University, adding that management is open to supporting innovative projects that align with the institution’s development goals.
The Dean of the Faculty of Built Environment described the initiative as a reflection of the University’s practical approach to learning, where students are trained to translate classroom knowledge into tangible results. He noted that the faculty continues to prioritise hands-on projects that demonstrate creativity and skill among students.
One of the major highlights was the project titled “Sustainable Design and Innovation: Utilising Recycled Pallets and PET Bottles for Outdoor Furniture Construction,” designed and constructed by Amoako Osei Benjamin, Amediku Godwin Selorm, Abbey Amey Erasmus, and Amoako Kwaku Enoch. This creative use of pallets and plastic bottles in the furniture design showcases the students’ ingenuity in promoting sustainable building practices. The project supports Sustainable Development Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and Goal 13 (Climate Action) by encouraging the reuse of plastic waste and the use of recycled materials in construction.
Another group, Richmond Amissah, Israel Nii Amartey, and Amannu Marcus, undertook a grass replanting project for soil restoration, which seeks to enhance the green spaces on campus and prevent soil erosion. This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 15 (Life on Land), which focuses on protecting, restoring, and promoting the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems.

The Head of Department, Dr. Pim-Wusu, praised the students for their creativity and effort, noting that the department will continue to guide learners toward environmentally conscious and practical building solutions.
The new facilities, while beautifying the campus also serve as clear examples of how education can drive sustainability. Through such innovative student projects, the Department of Building Technology continues to nurture a new generation of builders who are shaping a greener future for Accra Technical University.
