Accra Technical University Gets Refurbished Library

The Vice-Chancellor of Accra Technical University, Prof. Samuel Nii Odai, has revealed plans of the university to begin the construction of  a 7-storey library complex in 2022.  He explained that the library played a key role in research – a core mandate of the university – and thus the need to allocate more resources to enable it deliver on its mandates. that said the library played a key role in research so they would continue to allocate more resources to it for it to deliver. The expansion of the University Library, he added, will allow for the accommodation of more students simultaneously a well as provide enough comfortable working spaces for staff.

The Vice-Chancellor made this announcement in an address to recommission the refurbished Bachelor of Technology (BTech) Library of the university on December 16, 2021. The refurbishment works on the BTech Library, which is one of the libraries of ATU, has among other things replaced all wooden doors and louvre blades with sliding doors and windows with some state-of-the-art facilities installed in it, making it more conducive for academic work.

Prof. Odai further commended Library Department and the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Amevi Acakpovi who doubles as Chairman of the Library Board, for their relentless efforts in constantly endearing the Library to the University  Community and global audience through educational activities and attending to the needs of the Department respectively.

The University Librarian, Dr. Florence Plockey, in her address, thanked Management for the support in executing the refurbishment works. She appealed for continuous backing for the Department so that it would always be well resourced to be able to live up to its mandate as a research centre. Dr. Plockey also used the opportunity to apologize to faculty, students, and the University Community in general for the long closure of the facility. She said, “in spite of the long closure of the facility, our patrons must take consolation in the fact that the place was now in a better shape to solve their research needs”.

The guest speaker of the day, Prof. Ellis Badu, who is the former University Librarian of the University of Ghana Balm Library, was impressed to have seen the entire ATU Management present at the recommissioning ceremony. Their presence, he said, lent credence to their love and support for the Library Department.

He added that libraries had evolved over the years especially with the advent of internet. He was, however, quick to add that despite the existence of the internet, brick and mortar library was still very relevant and that researchers must make the most of it instead of dependent on the internet which is not well organised.

Prof. Badu, who is also a former Lecturer at the Information Studies Department of the University of Ghana, underscored the need for scholarly journals to be fully utilised by faculty, staff and students. “Make use of the scholarly journals both on and off campus because they cannot be found on the internet, the institution has subscribed and paid for it for you,” he stressed.

The Registrar of the university, Mrs. Sylvia B. Oppong, stressed the need for the facility to be used with care for it to continue to look good even after years. She proposed adding disability friendly features to the building to make it easy for the disabled to access the facility.

The ceremony was also used to honour Miss Vida Maku Puplampu, who emerged the best worker of the year in the Library Department. For her price, she received a certificate of recognition which was presented to her by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Nii Odai. The best worker award scheme, which was instituted in 2020, aims at honouring one deserving staff at the end of every year for meritorious services to encourage staff in the department to work harder.
