Accra Technical University (ATU) has benefited from one of three Sustainable Energy Service Centres (SESCs) established by the Millenium Development Authority (MiDA), in collaboration with the Energy Commission of Ghana.

The three SESCs located at ATU, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), are the first of their kind in Ghana with the potential to serve entities across the West Africa sub-region. 

The Centres were funded at $284,928 by the United States Government through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

At a brief handing-over ceremony on Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at ATU, beneficiary institutions were given energy audit instruments and a vehicle each to aid their operations.

The Vice-Chancellor of ATU, Professor Samuel Nii Odai, while recounting the genesis of the process leading to the establishment of the centre at ATU, expressed gratitude to MiDA and the staff of ATU who had gone through rigorous training that has equipped them with the requisite skills to act as faculty for future Training and Certification Programmes. He promised the gathering that ATU would make good use of the gesture.

The other beneficiary institutions were represented by Professor Elvis Asare-Bediako, Vice- Chancellor of the University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani, and Prof. George Yaw Obeng, Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, KNUST. They took turns to thank MiDA, MCC and Energy Commission for supporting them with the Centres and pledged to take good care of the equipment.

The establishment of the SESCs is part of the Ghana Power Compact Program’s Energy Efficiency and Demand Side Management (EEDSM) Project, funded by the MCC, an agency of the US Government, and the Government of Ghana.
