Achieving Strong Regional Influence: ATU Outdoors Five-year Strategic Plan

Accra Technical University has launched a five-year strategic plan to modernise the University into a world-class institution, advancing knowledge and setting sail for technical industrialisation.

Speaking at the Ceremony, the Guest of Honour, Honourable Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, the Deputy Minister of Education, lauded the University for the initiative on behalf of the education minister. He added that it is trite for technical universities in Ghana to begin mapping out developmental strategies that leverage the industrialisation of the 4th revolution. He added that the plans outlined in the document must not be seen only to invoke competition between traditional technical universities but the la crème of the world.

The Honourable Minister also stressed the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) as an important conduit to boost the country’s industrial growth. He advised the University to focus on that which differentiates them from the traditional universities and continue to pursue research in science and technological advancements. “There is the need to focus on the key mandate of development in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Research and Skills development relevant to meet the dictates of the 4th Industrial revolution,” he said.

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Samuel Nii Odai, said the University is very particular about the instructional objectives of the strategic document to achieve growth. He added that the implementation process would be initiated by himself each year, towards the end of the year and further decentralised to Senior Management, Directors, Heads of Departments and their respective Units for implementation. He further called for stakeholder and government support in partnership, subsistence and knowledge sharing to help manifest the vision of the strategic document into one that other Technical Universities can mirror.

The Chairman of Council, Dr. Wilfred Kwabena Anim-Odame, also launched the 2nd edition of the ATU Summer School. In his address, he said it was important to launch the 5-year strategic plan with the summer school. It forms the bedrock for brainstorming on how Faculty Heads, Departments and Units can localise the strategic document and operate on its stated objectives. He encouraged all staff to participate fully in the events schedule and provide thought-provoking solutions to the discussion put forward.

The Summer School commenced on 11th and ended on 15th October 2021.
