ATU src inducts 2022/2023 executives

Outgoing Students Representative Council (SRC) executives of Accra Technical University (ATU) passed the torch at a ceremony held on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at the University Auditorium.

The official ceremony took place after the final General Assembly (GA) meeting of the 2022/2023 SRC administration, led by its GA Speaker, Right Honourable Samara Nartey. ATU Dean of Student Affairs, Mr. Martin Owusu Amoamah, initiated the dissolution of the then-incumbent SRC General Assembly.

The handing-over ceremony started with a speech by now-former President Terry Ofori Baffour. He first apologised for any toes he may have stepped on during his tenure of office. He then urged students to contribute more to the SRC’s decision-making and activities. The Dean of Student Affairs stepped to the podium and encouraged the outgoing student leaders to keep up the advocacy and activism they displayed during their time on campus.

The formalities continued with the SRC Chief Justice Samuel Baah’s swearing-in of new executives by handing over gestures between the old executives and new executives. A prayer session was then held to invoke divine blessing and guidance upon the new administration. The new SRC president, Damesi Etse Kofi, thanked the previous SRC administration for a smooth transition. He also profusely appreciated the University’s management for all the guidance and cooperation.

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor of ATU, Professor Amevi Acakpovi, in the final speech of the ceremony, emphasised ATU’s value of student experience. He cited the three-month leadership programme that the school held for the new executives as a testament to management’s efforts to support the Student Representative Council. He concluded by inspiring students to get involved in the SRC’s activities.

The newly inducted executives will serve a term of one academic year.

In attendance were the Vice Dean of Students Affairs and the Dean of Engineering, among other officials of the University.

The Vice-Chancellor of Accra Technical University, Professor Samuel Nii Odai has

advised some staff of the University to be accountable and comply with standards. He

did so during his speech to close the weeklong International Public Sector Accounting

Standards (IPSAS) training held for the University’s Finance department.

IPSAS are financial reporting standards for use by public sector entities that aims to

improve the quality of general-purpose financial reporting, leading to better-informed

assessments of the resource allocation decisions made by governments; thereby

increasing transparency and accountability.

Accra Technical University, as part of its quest to adopt IPSAS, organised a training

programme for the Finance Directorate and other departments that are involved in the

University’s financial activities, such as the Internal Audit, Procurement and Human

Resources departments.

According to Professor Odai, while the University’s main purpose is to educate, a huge

fraction of work in such an institution involved handling and moving money. Knowing

when and how to report and do so accurately and transparently is an essential part of

the job because someone must account for it after all, in Professor Odai’s words.

For this purpose, ATU hosted experts from PricewaterhouseCoopers Ghana (PWC), an

international accounting and consultancy firm, to take staff members of the Finance

Directorate and other finance-related departments through training sessions that took

place daily from 23rd to 27th January 2023. Members of PWC who came to assist ATU

employees with the training included Hayfron Aboagye, Partner at PWC Ghana; Johnny

Mensah, Associate Director; Augustine Aboagye, Senior Manager; Esenam Asafo,

Manager; Steve Afrifa-Yamoah, Senior Associate and Darlington Gyan, Associate.

The Vice-Chancellor graced the occasion together with the Registrar, Mrs. Sylvia

Beatrice Oppong-Mensah. Staff members who underwent the programme received

certificates to mark their completion of the programme.
