ATU Wins Prestigious Global Grant to Power Campus with Solar Energy

Accra Technical University (ATU) has earned international recognition for its commitment to sustainability, emerging as one of four global recipients of the 2025 EBSCO Solar Grant.

The announcement was made at a press conference by EBSCO Information Services in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Now in its tenth year, the EBSCO Solar Grant awards a total of $300,000 to support the installation of solar panels at educational and public institutions across the globe.

ATU, Ghana’s premier technical university, joins this year’s awardees alongside Brooklyn Public Library (USA), Patten Free Library (USA), and Wolfe County Public Library (USA). The winning proposal was a collaborative effort between the University Library and its Sustainable Energy Service Centre.

As part of the grant, ATU will receive funding to install solar panels on key university facilities. The move is expected to reduce energy costs, enhance campus resilience during power outages, and advance the university’s leadership in renewable energy innovation.

The award adds to a growing list of sustainability milestones for ATU. In 2024, the university was recognised by Think Energy Media for excellence in SDG Research, Teaching and Learning, and Curriculum, reinforcing its leadership in driving the Sustainable Development Goals within higher education.

The EBSCO Solar initiative was launched to help libraries and academic institutions transition to renewable energy, with the aim of reinvesting savings into educational and community services. The programme has since become a powerful driver of climate action and innovation in the academic sector.
