Newly recruited staff at Accra Technical University have undergone a comprehensive orientation to acquaint themselves with the institution’s philosophy, culture, and work ethics. The event, held on Wednesday, December 12, 2024, at the University’s Council Chamber, brought together key officers to address the new staff, offering insights into the expectations and standards that have positioned the University as Ghana’s premier technical institution.
Welcoming the new employees, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Amevi Acakpovi, reiterated the University’s commitment to delivering quality education and driving job creation as its core values. He outlined the responsibilities of academic staff, urging them to prioritise teaching, research, and community service. Prof. Acakpovi emphasised professionalism and integrity in their roles, warning against unprofessional conduct, particularly acts like sexual harassment, which he noted would not be tolerated. He further encouraged the new staff to embrace discipline, perseverance, and resilience in their professional journey, reminding them of their mandate to uphold the University’s academic excellence.
The Registrar, Dr. Mrs. Sylvia Oppong Mensah, elaborated on the University’s administrative framework, explaining the chain of command and institutional procedures. She expressed confidence in the fresh perspectives and ideas the new staff would bring to the University, pointing out their potential to contribute to its continued growth.
The Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Felix Kutsanedzie, highlighted the responsibilities of academic staff, including preparing comprehensive course outlines, maintaining high teaching standards, and adhering to timelines for marking scripts. He urged staff to teach diligently, impart knowledge, and positively influence students’ attitudes and behaviours.
The orientation programme, described as part of management’s efforts to integrate new staff into the institution’s culture, highlighted Accra Technical University’s standing as Ghana’s first Technical University, the fourth-ranked university in the country, and 43rd in Sub-Saharan Africa. This initiative, according to management, is proof of the University’s commitment to advancing a shared vision of excellence and innovation.
