ATU Explores Strategic Academic Partnership with University of Nusa Putra-Indonesia
The Management of Accra Technical University and a delegation from Nusa Putra University, Indonesia, have discussed the possibility of a strategic partnership in academics and research. The Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Felix Kutsanedzie, received the Indonesian delegation in the company of various Deans and Heads of Departments in the Council Chamber on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. The meeting reinforces the University’s visibility beyond the borders of the continent, through exchange programmes and research collaborations with recognisable Universities across the globe. The components of the discussions covered scholarship opportunities for international students at the University of Nusa Putra, academic exchange programmes, collaborative research in myriad fields, and collaborative teaching and learning. The Nusa Putra University is one of the reputable Universities in Indonesia, located in Sukabumi, West Java. Since its establishment in 2002, it has grown to be a citadel of global thinkers, creating intelligent, creative, innovative, and religious people who are strong for a better future of the world.
Accra Technical University Champions Efficient Energy Use with EPC Workshop
Accra Technical University’s Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Centre for Renewable Energy Entrepreneurship and Innovation has held a workshop on Energy Performance Certification outcomes, marking a significant step in its contribution towards efficient use of energy and energy consumption nationwide. The workshop held on January 16, 2025, at the conference room of the University Akwaaba Lodge was purposed to discuss, share insights, and offer recommendations on the EPC results culminating from the EPC auditing of selected buildings within the metropolis. Speaking at the opening of the programme, the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Amevi Acakpovi, commended the University’s Sustainable Energy Service Centre for the strides it has made since its inauguration under the auspices of the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA). He lauded the initiative of training and certifying professionals to conduct energy performance certification auditing to ensure that public and private institutions and industrial and commercial customers adopt and implement cost-effective energy savings measures. He announced the training of three cohorts, of which the first batch has been certified after successfully writing the national examination. Professor Amevi Acakpovi expressed optimism about the future of Ghana’s energy efficiency, stating that the training of qualified professionals will play a significant role in the effective use of energy as well as conscientising people on energy use. He called for a policy formulation on energy auditing, making energy auditing on buildings in the country mandatory. He also suggested periodic energy auditing to comprehensively assess energy use and maintain consciousness of energy efficiency in the country. Mr. Denis Turkson, who represented the German International Cooperation Society (GIZ) at the occasion, was expectant of the results from the energy performance auditing conducted by ATU’s sustainable energy centre, having experienced the results from the two other centres at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Energy and Natural Resources. He also added that his outfit will be looking to provide opportunities for employment for professionals who have undergone training and received certification. Energy Facilitator at the ATU-IET-CREEI, Dr. Peter Nyanor presented the results of the EPC, outlining the methodologies used, interpreting the performance outcomes, and providing recommendations. The EPC methodologies were contingent on the type of building, its purpose, and the period of which it has been used. Overall, the centre received authorisation from 43 buildings in the metropolis for the EPC. The assessment involved estimating specific energy consumption and greenhouse emissions and allocating energy performance star ratings. Findings revealed that out of the 42 buildings selected, twenty-three received 1-star ratings, four had 2-star ratings, three received 3-star ratings, and two received 4-star ratings. Six of the buildings received 5-star ratings, while five buildings received 6-star ratings. The deputy director of the Sustainable Energy Service Centre, Mr. Sydney Lloyd Abbey, elaborated on EPC challenges, energy-saving opportunities, and future strategies. According to him, the world has become a global village, and efficient energy use is the responsibility of all nations in tackling global warming. He likened the EPC initiative to little drops of water, which will go a long way in saving the world from the repercussions of global warming. He proffered efficient ways to use and save energy, such as switching all appliances when they are not in use and using natural light during the day. The EPC is a sustainable energy initiative aimed at building capacity in energy auditing, which would ensure a significant number of qualified and certified professionals available in Ghana to assist public and private institutions and industrial and commercial customers to adopt and implement cost-effective energy savings measures.

Accra Technical University Heralds the Yuletide with Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols and Staff Recognition
The warm glow of Christmas lights and the harmonious voices of the Accra Technical University choir. filled the University forecourt on the evening of Thursday, December 18, 2024. The occasion was the university’s annual carols service, a celebration of faith, unity, and achievement that brought the entire ATU community together to reflect on the year and look forward with hope. The atmosphere was alive with festive cheer as staff, students, retirees, and stakeholders gathered for the event, which combined scripture readings, musical performances, and heartfelt tributes. Nine carefully selected Bible verses, read by directors, guests, and stakeholders, weaved a narrative of faith and inspiration. Speaking at the event, Professor Amevi Acakpovi, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Accra Technical University, congratulated the staff for their dedicated contributions throughout the year. He emphasised that their collective efforts had led to significant achievements for the university, including its recent ranking as the fourth-best university in Ghana, the top Technical University in the country, and 43rd in Sub-Saharan Africa. Additionally, ATU earned recognition from the African Academic Conference as the best Technical University in West Africa, a clear indication of its remarkable growth. Professor Acakpovi encouraged the staff to maintain their commitment and strive for excellence in the coming year. The celebration also paid homage to the people who have built and sustained ATU’s success. Several staff members were honoured with long-service awards, recognising their dedication and invaluable service of 15 years to the institution. Retirees, whose years of devotion have left an indelible mark on ATU’s legacy, were also celebrated in a moment filled with gratitude and reverence. As the evening progressed, the carol service became a reconnection of history and a reunion between staff, students, and alumni amid food, music, and dance.
A New Take on Christmas Dining: HCIM Students Highlight Culinary Excellence
The Department of Hotel, Catering, and Institutional Management (HCIM) at Accra Technical University redefined the essence of Christmas culinary traditions with a dynamic showcase on 17th December 2024. Held in the University Auditorium, the event provided a platform for students to demonstrate their creative flair, technical expertise, and leadership in the hospitality industry. The Head of the Department, Mrs. Lynda Dede Graham, set the tone for the event with a call to reimagine festive menus. “It’s time to change the narrative,” she remarked. “Instead of the usual chicken and turkey for Christmas, let’s embrace innovative alternatives such as catfish fusion to create unique and memorable dining experiences.” Her message encouraged students and attendees to think beyond conventional boundaries when crafting festive dishes. Mrs. Graham also emphasised the wider benefits of such events. “Active participation in these programmes helps students develop essential skills while balancing academics, creativity, and leisure. It nurtures personal attributes such as discipline, confidence, and a strong sense of responsibility—qualities that are crucial for success in both personal and professional spheres,” she noted. A standout feature of the event was the Lessons and Carols segment, where students took centre stage, blending festive traditions with contemporary creativity. Their storytelling, music, and organisational efforts created an engaging and memorable atmosphere, showcasing their talents beyond the kitchen. Adding an industry perspective to the event, Frances Arthur, Key Account Manager at Accra City Hotel, led an interactive session with the students. She discussed the role of internships in bridging academic learning with real-world experience and encouraged students to seize opportunities to prepare them for successful careers in the hospitality sector. The event seamlessly integrated educational value, industry insight, and festive cheer, providing students with an invaluable opportunity to hone their skills while connecting with industry professionals. It also reinforced Accra Technical University’s commitment to fostering innovation and equipping students to meet the dynamic demands of the hospitality sector. Ultimately, the showcase was a celebration of ingenuity, tradition, and forward-thinking. It not only reimagined Christmas dining with creative alternatives such as catfish but also inspired the next generation of hospitality leaders to challenge norms and lead with innovation.
Accra Technical University Dominates Pan-African Debate Championship in Uganda
The Debate and Public Speaking Club of Accra Technical University has raised the University’s flag high far away in Uganda in the Pan-African Universities debate championship, which took place in Uganda on the 16th of December 2024. The team chalked significant success, swooping multiple awards and setting remarkable records in the championship that would be etched in the history of the prestigious championship. Team ATU did not just go to the championship to make up the numbers, as they quickly showed their dominance in the debate series, winning medals in all categories and setting some fantastic records. The team was 1st and 2nd best Public speaking adjudication runner-up in Africa, as well as the 3rd Best Public Speaking in Africa and runner-up. In addition to this, the team found itself among the top 3 best public speaking judges in the Africa category. Ultimately, the team won the Best Public Speaking Judge in Africa medal. There were also several record-breaking performances from the participants from ATU, deserving of mention. For instance, of the 5 students who represented ATU, 4 won at least an award. Furthermore, ATU became the only University to reach the Public Speaking African finalists for the second PAUDC in two years and set the record for Africa’s best 3 Judges in Africa, with all coming from Accra Technical University. The record for the number of appearances for any Ghanaian representation in Africa was also set by ATU, having appeared two times in a top-room debate. Overall, the team emerged as the best technical University in Ghana and in Africa by performance for any Ghanaian University. The Pan-African Universities’ Debate Championship is Africa’s premier debate championship, which offers a platform for intellectual exchange, critical thinking, and meaningful dialogue on pressing issues facing Africa and the world. The 2024 edition was hosted by Uganda, “the pearl of Africa” offering a mix of adventure from its stunning landscape and cultural heritage.
Newly Recruited Staff Undergo Orientation
Newly recruited staff at Accra Technical University have undergone a comprehensive orientation to acquaint themselves with the institution’s philosophy, culture, and work ethics. The event, held on Wednesday, December 12, 2024, at the University’s Council Chamber, brought together key officers to address the new staff, offering insights into the expectations and standards that have positioned the University as Ghana’s premier technical institution. Welcoming the new employees, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Amevi Acakpovi, reiterated the University’s commitment to delivering quality education and driving job creation as its core values. He outlined the responsibilities of academic staff, urging them to prioritise teaching, research, and community service. Prof. Acakpovi emphasised professionalism and integrity in their roles, warning against unprofessional conduct, particularly acts like sexual harassment, which he noted would not be tolerated. He further encouraged the new staff to embrace discipline, perseverance, and resilience in their professional journey, reminding them of their mandate to uphold the University’s academic excellence. The Registrar, Dr. Mrs. Sylvia Oppong Mensah, elaborated on the University’s administrative framework, explaining the chain of command and institutional procedures. She expressed confidence in the fresh perspectives and ideas the new staff would bring to the University, pointing out their potential to contribute to its continued growth. The Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Felix Kutsanedzie, highlighted the responsibilities of academic staff, including preparing comprehensive course outlines, maintaining high teaching standards, and adhering to timelines for marking scripts. He urged staff to teach diligently, impart knowledge, and positively influence students’ attitudes and behaviours. The orientation programme, described as part of management’s efforts to integrate new staff into the institution’s culture, highlighted Accra Technical University’s standing as Ghana’s first Technical University, the fourth-ranked university in the country, and 43rd in Sub-Saharan Africa. This initiative, according to management, is proof of the University’s commitment to advancing a shared vision of excellence and innovation.
